Woman speaks of gratitude to DIY SOS team

A West Bromwich woman says she's grateful to the team of volunteers that helped build her a bigger house.

Sandra Chambers needed an extension because she looks after her two young grandchildren following the death of her daughter two years ago.

She couldn't afford it so the BBC programme DIY SOS stepped in with local traders.

Slip roads closed over weekend at J6 of M6

The exit slip roads at J6 (Spaghetti junction) of the M6 will be closed over the weekend to allow work to be carried out to replace damaged concrete.

Highways England is reminding drivers of the closures that will take place from 20:00 on Friday until 06:00 on Monday.

Burglars jailed for stealing Villa skipper's Harry Potter books

A gang that stole Aston Villa captain John Terry's Harry Potter books among other items has been jailed for a series of raids on luxury homes.

The signed, first edition novels valued at £18,000 were taken along with more than £400,000 of designer goods when Mr Terry's Surrey mansion was targeted in February while he was away skiing - a trip he shared with 3.4m Instagram followers.

Thieves took the chance to help themselves to property including designer handbags worth £126,00 and more than £220,000 of jewellery.

Birmingham remains in the running for the 2022 Commonwealth Games after passing preliminary assessments.

Birmingham has been the subject of recent inspection visits by an independent assessment panel, Commonwealth Games Federation representatives and Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport officials.

The assessment panel found Birmingham's plans had sufficient merit to warrant further developing proposals.

West Bromwich Albion have appointed former manager Gary Megson as the new Assistant Head Coach.

Megson led the club to their first ever promotion to the Premier League in 2002 and steps in after former assistant Dave Kemp decided to retire.

Contraflow system to be in place on M5 over weekend

Repair work on the M5 in Oldbury is stepping up this weekend.

As part of the multi-million pound project, a contraflow is being introduced on the northbound carriageway between J1 for West Bromwich and J2 for Dudley and Wolverhampton.

Only two lanes will be operating in each direction, with a 30mph speed limit.

Cladding at Birmingham Metropolitan College fails fire safety tests

Birmingham Metropolitan College has announced one of its buildings has failed new fire safety tests being carried out in the light of the Grenfell Tower disaster.

Cladding and insulation on the Matthew Boulton College was found to be more combustible than it's meant to be.

Fire safety officers say the college buildings are still safe to use.

The BBC understands it's one of at least 60 tower buildings that have failed the new tests.

The college said in a statement: "The Fire and Rescue Service has already conducted a precautionary fire safety check of the college.

"They are satisfied that the college has in place appropriate fire safety measures to mitigate the risks from fire and the college has declared the building safe for continued use."

Man shot by police in 'stable condition'

A man who was shot by an armed police officer on Wednesday night is in a stable condition in hospital, the West Midlands force says.

The victim, said to be in his early 40s, was shot in Hereford Close, Rubery.

A 21-year-old man arrested on suspicion of firearms offences has been bailed under strict curfew conditions.

Two other men, aged 17 and 20, and a 53-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of drugs offences have been released under investigation.

Fire at industrial unit was 'deliberate'

A fire was deliberately started at an industrial unit on Wombourne Enterprise Park in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire Police says.

The force is appealing for witnesses.

The blaze at Wombourne Windows is thought to have begun late on Wednesday evening or in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The force said the fire was contained. A joint investigation is under way between its officers and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Jail for thug who attacked man celebrating leukaemia recovery

A man who was out celebrating his recovery from leukaemia was rushed to hospital for a "lifesaving" blood transfusion when a thug threw a bottle at his head.

Luke Pinder's victim was left with a "deep gash", West Midlands Police said.

The 21 year old from Millfield Close, Hawkinge, Kent, attacked as the man, 25, was leaving the Three Horseshoes pub in Stirchley, Birmingham, at closing time in September 2016.

CCTV footage of Pinder was circulated and he was identified.

He pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm and was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court to eight years in prison.
