Man stabbed wife in front of children

A man stabbed his wife to death "without warning" and in front of their children after she confronted him when he returned from a night of binge drinking and gambling.

Shaeen Akthar, 49, was murdered by her husband, 46-year-old Parvez Akthar at their family home on Wright Road, Washwood Heath, Birmingham on 15 October.

Akthar initially denied intending to kill the mother of five, but admitted her murder at Birmingham Crown Court. He has been jailed for life, to serve a minimum of 20 years.

Mrs Akthar confronted her husband when he returned home at around 4pm having been out all night drinking. An argument erupted and he refused to leave. Without warning, and in front of his children, he stabbed Mrs Akthar in the left side of her chest.

Tributes paid to great-grandmother found dead

Tributes are being paid to a woman found dead at her home in Walsall.

The body of 74-year-old great-grandmother Anne James was discovered at an address in Doveridge Place in Highgate on Wednesday night.

A murder investigation is under way and a 25-year-old man has been arrested.

Ms James's family have described her as "amazing, generous, kind, and much loved".

Machete-wielding gang robbed two casinos

Raiders armed with machetes and a disk cutter robbed two Birmingham casinos last night.

Admiral Casino on Bearwood Road was targeted at 22:10 - four or five raiders carrying knives fled the scene with cash.

Later, at about 23:45, Rainbow Casino on Portland Road in Edgbaston was raided by three robbers carrying machetes and a disk cutter. Several cash boxes were forces open and a black Audi A5 was also stolen.

Police said they are "keeping an open mind about whether the two robberies are linked" and are appealing for further information.

Paul Weller gig cancelled after all

Early optimism about Paul Weller's gig at Birmingham's Genting Arena has proved ill-judged as the musician has announced he will not be performing tonight.

He tweeted earlier that the show would indeed go on, despite numerous other events across the region being cancelled and low turnout for a Stereophonics gig at the venue on Thursday due to the snow.

Weller said the decision was made to ensure "everyone stays as safe as possible" during the extreme weather.
