Weather warnings for the weekend

The Met Office is still warning of snow for the West Midlands on Saturday and Sunday, and it has an amber weather warning in place for parts of Staffordshire and Shropshire.

Other areas of those counties, along with Warwickshire, Birmingham and parts of Cheshire are subject to a yellow warning.

Two men rescued after falling down shaft

Firefighters have rescued two men who they say fell 10ft (3m) down a shaft at the Hawthorn Trading Estate in Oldbury.

West Midlands Fire service said the pair sustained minor injuries and were taken to hospital.

Man critical after axe attack

A man's been left with life-threatening skull and spinal fractures after being attacked with an axe in Wolverhampton, police say.

The 42-year-old from Penn, also suffered a brain injury in the attack involving around ten men on Parkfield Road, in the Parkfield area of the city just before 20:00 yesterday.

A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Det Insp Chris Fox, leading the investigation, said it was an “incredibly serious and violent assault, which has left a man in a critical condition with life-changing injuries".

Barons and Tigers start play-off campaigns

Both the Solihull Barons and the Telford Tigers are in play-off action this weekend.

Tigers travel to Whitley Bay to play the Warriors tomorrow, before returning to their own rink on Sunday for the home leg.

Big Bang Fair young winners announced

A flatpack 3D printer, a molecule separator and a communication device that could help evacuate buildings have been named as the winning ideas at an annual science festival in Birmingham.

Over 500 young people from the across the country were selected to show their ideas at the Big Bang Fair, where 10 were shortlisted to pitch Dragon's Den-style to a panel of judges.

Three illegal firearms have been recovered after officers raided addresses in Birmingham, police say.

According to the West Midlands force, a pistol and loaded magazine were found today at a house in Bellevue, Edgbaston, and a 35-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of storing the firearm.

Police said a sawn-off shotgun and cartridges were uncovered during a search on Thursday of an unrelated address in Hillmeads Road, Kings Norton, where a 32-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm and ammunition.

A third gun was seized by officers called to Colebrook Road, Shirley, today by a taxi driver who reported being threatened by a passenger who ran off without paying.

A 28-year-old was arrested on suspicion of possessing an illegal firearm and non-payment.
