Fisher signs new Blaze contract

Coventry Blaze have announced the re-signing of American forward Drew Fisher for the 2016/17 Elite League season.

The 28-year-old from Minnesota joined Blaze last summer from Tulsa Oilers.

Rare Shakespeare book is bomb-proof

A high-security, bomb-proof cabinet is protecting two rare books going on display in Warwick.

A First Folio of Shakespeare's plays and a King James Bible, which date back to the early 17th Century, are both priceless. They've been installed at the Collegiate Church of St Mary for an exhibition that opens on Saturday.

[The cabinet] is bomb-proof and vibration sensitive, all the necessary precautions to keep these precious books nice and safe.

Council agrees hospitality role for Shire Hall

Warwickshire County councillors have approved plans to create their own hospitality company to take over the running of Warwick's Old Shire Hall building.

Built in 1750, the complex, which also contains the Judges' Houses, has stood largely empty for the last six years since the law courts, which were based there, moved into a new base in Leamington. 

Now the county council's looking at how to make the most of it as a venue for conferences, weddings and performances.

Corbyn's Momentum launches in Warwick

The campaign group set up by supporters of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn,  Momentum, has launched a new branch in South Warwickshire.

At a meeting in Warwick last night, a group of around 20 Labour Party members and supporters pledged to fight for what they described as a more democratic Labour Party and for a "broad Labour Movement."

Those earning less than £46,000 'set to be priced out region's property market'

First time buyers in the West Midlands will need to earn more than £46,000 a year by 2020. 

That's according to new research from the charity Shelter. 

It says the figure represents a 15% increase on the current salary needed to afford a home here. 

Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway raises £250k for 'last mile'

An appeal for £1.25m to complete the "last mile" of a heritage railway line has raised £250,000 in one week. 

Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway currently runs between Cheltenham and Laverton but wants to extend to Broadway in Worcestershire.

Family issue plea over missing Leamington man

The family of a Warwickshire man who's been missing for two months has issued an emotional appeal for him to get in touch.

Sakhminder Uppal, known as Navi, was last seen at his home in Leamington on Valentine's Day.

He was picked up by a taxi from Freshwater Grove in the town and was dropped off near to Victoria Park but hasn't been seen since.

A petition against plans to close the post offices in Long Lawford and Bulkington has been presented in Parliament. 

The 1,551 signatures were handed over in the Commons by the Conservative MP for Rugby, Mark Pawsey. 

Wherefore art thou Romeo Station? Change at Hamlet, of course

A special edition Tube map has been produced in which station names have been replaced with Shakespeare's plays and characters.  

The map will be available to buy from Monday.

Plans to move District council HQ

Warwick District Council says a £44m plan to sell its current offices for housing and build a new headquarters will save money in the long run. 

Riverside House

The idea is to develop the existing Riverside House site in Leamington Spa for housing, build smaller offices on the site of the Covent Garden car park as well as additional parking. 

Council leader Andrew Mobbs says the authority estimates the new plans could save around £300,000 a year.

Police issue warning to Millwall fans ahead of Ricoh clash

Police are warning Millwall fans not to travel to the Sky Blues match this weekend if they haven't got a ticket. 

The London club had an allocation of 1,800 which has sold out.

University takes 'Hollywood technology' to Chelsea

Biomechanics experts from Coventry University will be exhibiting motion capture technology at next month's Chelsea Flower Show, helping gardeners to improve their health.

They'll be showcasing a sensor suit which can show the body's movements as a live animation on screen which, they say, will reveal the science behind simple gardening tasks.

Shakepeare First Folio to go on display

A rare first copy of Shakespeare's collected plays dating back to the early 17th Century is to go on display at St Mary's Church, Warwick. 

The manuscript, known as a First Folio, is normally kept at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, but it will be on show on Saturday as part of commemorations to mark the 400 years since the playwright's death.

Bears secure draw in rain-hit opening match

Hampshire held out against Warwickshire's attack to leave the Bears with a draw in the first County Championship game of the season.

In his first game as county captain, Ian Bell made 174 to earn the Bears a first-innings lead of 158.

But the match was hit by bad weather and a draw was declared just before 18:00 yesterday.

Ian Bell was a masterclass. There isn't anyone better than him when he's playing that well. He set up the position for us to have a crack at it.

Plans revealed for new rail hub

A new rail hub serving north Warwickshire and the West Midlands could bring thousands of jobs to the region, developers say.

Plans have been submitted for the site at Gailey just off junction 12 of the M6.  

It would allow freight to be moved from rail to lorries and include large areas for warehouses. 

The proposals are supported by Network Rail, but would need the approval of the Secretary of State to go ahead. 

Citizen Khan heads for Coventry

The popular comedy character Citizen Khan will be appearing live at Warwick Arts Centre on Monday 2 May as part of his first national tour.
