Warwickshire changes stand on combined authority membership

County councillors have voted for Warwickshire to become a non-constituent member of the West Midlands Combined Authority.

In a vote in September 2015 they rejected the idea opting, instead, to explore a closer working relationship with Coventry.

A statement from the council states councillors agreed the move "with a view to negotiating the basis of an acceptable deal on which Warwickshire could become a constituent member".

M6 northbound: Lane blocked near Aston Expressway

There's one lane blocked and slow traffic on the M6 northbound between J5, A452 (Castle Bromwich) and J6 A38(M) Aston Expressway, because of an accident, BBC Travel news reports.

BBC to close websites as part of £15m savings

The BBC announces the closure of a number of websites including BBC Food in a bid to save £15m.

The proposals, announced by James Harding, director of BBC news and current affairs, include closing the Newsbeat website and app.

Up to 40 news index web pages will also close offering instead an open stream on the rolling guide to BBC and local news provider stories, 'Local Live'.

The announcement on Tuesday follows the publication of the government's White Paper on the future of the BBC last week.  

Warwickshire slump continues

Bridge strike causing rush hour rail delays

A vehicle has struck a bridge at Rugeley Trent Valley, causing disruption to trains between Stafford / Stoke-on-Trent and Nuneaton, Network Rail reports.

Trains are now able to run but a speed restriction will remain in place causing delays of up to an hour until 18:00.

Road transport is operating for London Midland passengers travelling between Stafford and Nuneaton.

Fire crews say one person was trapped for a time after a car overturned on Wildcroft Road in Coventry, but no-one was seriously injured.

Supply teacher spend exceeds £800m

Schools in the West Midlands struggling to recruit teachers spent £160 per pupil on supply staff last year, analysis by BBC News finds.   

Across England the bill for supply staff was £821m it has emerged.

Teachers unions say the amount of money spent reflects a "serious teacher recruitment and retention crisis". 

Driver airlifted to hospital after A46 crash

A woman in her thirties was trapped in the wreckage of a car she was driving for around 45 minutes after a crash on the A46 this morning.

She was airlifted to hospital after the crash on Stags Hill in Warwickshire.

A second driver involved suffered minor injuries.

Warwickshire have escaped a points deduction after having their pitch for the match against Somerset at Edgbaston marked "poor" by the umpires.

The ECB's Cricket Discipline Commission has ruled there was no evidence Warwickshire had breached the regulation that requires a county to "actively seek to prepare the best quality cricket pitch that it can" and so has taken no further action.

The commission could have docked Warwickshire up to 20 points.

Hundreds of students affected by school building closure

Around 340 pupils have been sent home "until further notice" after ten classrooms at a Warwickshire school shut due to "possibly high risk" structural issues.

Engineers were called to Ash Green School just outside Coventry amid teachers' concerns and yesterday advised the evacuation of pupils.

Head teacher David Powell says there will be further tests and they should know within a couple of days whether the 60-year-old building can be repaired or temporary classrooms needed.  

Years Eight and Nine have been asked to stay away until further notice.

No serious injuries in M6 southbound crash

A man has been taken to hospital with a head injury following this mornings crash on the M6 southbound between junctions two (Coventry) and one (Rugby).

Three cars and a lorry were involved in the crash which left debris strewn across the carriageway. The injured man had to be freed from his car by emergency services before he could be taken for treatment, the ambulance service said.

Three other patients were treated at the scene.

Bright spells this afternoon with some cloud around but feeling warm in the sunshine and light winds with top temperatures of 18C (64F).

Frequent school moves linked to teenage psychosis

Hallucinations, delusions and disturbed thoughts in 18-year-olds may in part be due to frequently moving school as a child, say University of Warwick researchers.  

The study, published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, says doctors and teachers should be aware "school mobility" is an important risk factor for psychopathology.

Delays on A5 and M6 northbound

The A5 in Kilsby remains closed with very slow traffic in both directions between the A428 junction and the Rugby Road junction, because of a serious accident involving a car and a motorbike, BBC Travel reports.

A diversion is in operation - through Rugby via the A428 and the A426. 

Also, two lanes are closed and there's very slow traffic on the M6 northbound between J5, A452 (Castle Bromwich) and J6 A38(M) Spaghetti Junction, because of an accident involving three lorries and recovery work. 

Travel time is at least 20 minutes with congestion to J4, M42 (Coleshill).

Police 'more likely to suffer assaults' if wearing body camera

Police officers may be more likely to suffer assaults if they are wearing body-worn cameras, a new study suggests. 

Preliminary results from eight forces in the UK and US, including the West Midlands, found rates of assault were 15% higher when cameras were worn.

Travel: A5 closed both ways

The A5 in Kilsby Northamptonshire is closed in both directions between the A428 junction and the Rugby Road junction because of a serious accident involving a car and a motorbike.

The latest accident to hit the M6 is a six-vehicle collision between J5 and J6.

Motorway police say no-one was seriously hurt.

Woman airlifted to hospital after crash on A46

A woman's been airlifted to hospital after a serious collision on the A46 Alcester road in Billesley.

Police say they're still at the scene of a two vehicle crash near to the Stag public house which happened around 09:10.

The road is expected to remain closed for several hours and traffic is being redirected through Grafton.

Michael Lumb century gives Notts boost against Warwickshire

Michael Lumb made his first first-class century since September 2013 for Nottinghamshire as Warwickshire's bowlers toiled at Trent Bridge.

After the Bears were all out for 373, Lumb accelerated to a half-century from 48 balls, striking 20 fours in his 108.

One person freed after M6 crash

The fire service used cutting equipment to free one person trapped in a vehicle, after a collision on the M6 this morning.

They were called to the scene between J2 and J1 at 07:43 to the incident involving three cars and one HGV.

Two lanes remain closed and the police, ambulance services and Highways England are at the scene.
