Landlords ordered to pay out nearly £21,000 over a string of health and safety offences

Two Rugby landlords have been fined after inspectors uncovered a string of safety offences including broken fire alarms, missing floorboards and holes in the ceiling in “one of the most serious cases” they’ve ever investigated.

Rugby Hall of Fame to become museum in sport's hometown

The World Rugby Hall of Fame is to be turned into a museum in the town where the sport was born almost 200 years ago.  

Footage from World Rugby's video archive and sporting memorabilia will form interactive displays, celebrating key moments and star players.

Mental health patients travelling for treatment due to bed shortage

More than 200 mental health patients have been forced to travel outside the West Midlands for treatment because of a shortage of specialist beds. 

Figures obtained by the BBC and online journal Community Care show figures are up by almost a third on the previous year.

Pupils continue to be affected by classroom block closure

Some pupils at Ash Green School in Coventry are being asked to stay at home for the next two weeks because part of the building is stucturally unsafe.

Last week, 340 pupils were asked to work at home after ten classrooms were closed.

A statement on the school's website says a structural engineer's initial report confirms the principal was "correct to close the classroom block". It adds the remainder of the school buildings are safe.

Pupils affected last week are to return to school on Monday, but Year Seven students are being asked to work from home. 

We have had the structural engineer's report and we will need to continue to make alternative arrangements over the next two school weeks until Year 11 and 13 have finished their examinations.

Blood donor drive uses virtual world

A Stratford-upon-Avon woman, who needed nearly 37 pints of blood after giving birth, is taking part in a national campaign to encourage more donors. 

Natasha Pollock, 34,  almost died when she had Oliver on Christmas day. 

Now a virtual reality app will show donors the effect of giving Natasha blood on a giant screen outside New Street Station in Birmingham. 

Picture: Car ends up on roof inches from home's front door

The fire service has released a picture of a car that ended up on its roof in Nuneaton yesterday.

It says firefighters used cutting equipment to free the driver who wasn't seriously injured in the crash on Hickman Road.

A doctor and former army major from Rugby has returned home after winning a record nine medals at the Invictus Games in Florida.

Dr Jen Warren became the UK's most decorated athlete in the games after winning one gold and eight silvers on the road and track, and in the pool.

Former special constable guilty of indecent assault

A former special constable from Warwickshire has been found guilty of two indecent assaults committed against a boy in 2001 and 2002.

Ronald Potter, 78 from Tippers Lane, Fillongley, was cleared of rape and sexual activity with a child.

Eight other defendants, all men, have been found guilty at Warwick Crown Court today of committing sexual offences against another teenage boy - who was in council care. 

Judge Sylvia de Bertodano warned the men they face terms of imprisonment when they are sentenced on July 1.

Fatal transporter collision: latest

A spokesman from Manheim, whose transporter was involved, said: "We are working with the police and fully support their investigation.

"We understand that our driver is a witness and no arrests have been made."

A woman in her 80s is being treated for a broken arm and dislocated shoulder after having her handbag snatched in Nuneaton say police

It happened between 13:30 and 14:00 yesterday afternoon in Caernarfon Drive. 

She was approached by a man on a bike who grabbed the bag strap causing her to fall. 

Fatal transporter collision: police appeal for witnesses

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the fatal collision in Stratford this morning to come forward.

As we've been reporting this afternoon, a woman died and a child was seriously injured.

Western Road remains closed for a police investigation.

Fatal transporter collision: Girl sustains 'multiple serious injuries'; driver and third pedestrian uninjured

Here's more on our breaking story about a woman who's died in a collision with a car transporter in Stratford:

West Midlands Ambulance Service says the young girl involved sustained "multiple serious injuries" and was given trauma care before being airlifted to Birmingham Children's Hospital.

A second girl, also a pedestrian, was assessed by paramedics but was unharmed and didn’t require hospital treatment. The lorry driver, a man, was uninjured.

A spokesperson said: “Ambulance staff would like to praise the bystanders and, in particular, the staff from a nearby car dealership for their help and assistance at the scene.”

BreakingWoman dead and child injured in collision with car transporter

A woman has died and a child has been seriously injured in a collision in Western Road, Stratford, this morning.

The crash, reported at about 08:45, involved pedestrians and a car transporter, Warwickshire Police said.

The woman was declared dead at the scene. A girl with serious pelvic injuries was airlifted to Birmingham Children's Hospital, where her condition was described as stable.

Another girl who was walking with the woman and injured child was unharmed.

Data published today suggests each square metre costs £2,600 - the second highest price in the UK outside London.

Western Road remains closed following 'serious' collision

Police say Western Road in Stratford will be closed until at least 13:00 after a "serious" collision.

The ambulance service says it treated three patients at the site.

As we reported earlier, the fire service said the collision involved a pedestrian and car transporter. It said it was working to release a casualty and 'persons' were trapped.

World Rugby Hall of Fame to be located in birthplace of game

Rugby's been named as the location for the World Rugby Hall of Fame.

It will be based in the town's Art Gallery and Museum and open to visitors by the end of this year.

Family pays tribute to "much loved" man who died in Coventry crash

Police have named Leonard Steptoe as the man who died in a collision on Sewall Highway.

The 73-year-old died after being struck by a car near to the junction of Sullivan Road last month.

His family said he was a "much loved dad, granddad, great-granddad and brother" who was "taken from us so tragically".

Police are urging anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward.
