Atherstone's preparing to welcome the world's top women cyclists - Warwickshire hosts the Aviva Woman's Tour for the first time on Thursday.

Nearly 40 shops are putting on a window display for the race which starts in the town at 09:45.

Amateur photographer Kevin Richards managed to take this amazing image of a peregrine falcon resting on top of the Cemex offices in Rugby town centre yesterday.

He said he'd been looking for the bird after hearing reports of one in the town over the weekend, and had just about given up when he spotted the bird from the Clock Tower car park.

A keen bird watcher, he said: "I'm so pleased, it's the first time I've ever been close enough to photograph one. Just sheer luck".

Travel: All lanes should re-open soon on M40

Travel time is still around 60 minutes to get through barrier repairs on the M40 northbound between J12, B4451 (Gaydon) and Warwick Services.

Work had to be stopped briefly due to thunder and lightning but Highways England says it's about to start a rolling road-block and all lanes should be open within the next half an hour.

'Devastated' family pays tribute to stabbing victim

The family of stabbing victim Liam McGerrigan say they're "devastated" that "such a kind, warm, sensitive soul [has been] taken from us in such a senseless manner".

"Amongst our tears.. we find your beautiful smile Liam," their statement continues.

Two men have appeared at Birmingham Crown Court this morning charged with the murder of the Coventry man.

Mr McGerrigan, 27, was pronounced dead after officers were called to Holyhead Road, Coventry, last Thursday.

Funnel cloud formation over Rugby

A funnel cloud was spotted forming over Rugby earlier today.

Duncan Murphy took this picture around 14:20 of the formation around the Brownsover area.

Steve Jackson from local weather station at Bablake tweeted there could be more in this afternoon's thunderstorms.

The cloud doesn't become a tornado unless it hits the ground.

Thousands of homes sitting empty across the West Midlands

New BBC research shows there are more than 24,000 empty council homes across the region.

The properties have been sitting vacant for six months or longer, with many derelict and run down. 

Councils say they have worked hard over the last decade to reduce the number.

Speedway: Coventry's Danny crowned king

Coventry Bees rider Danny King is the new British Speedway Champion after a ride to win the final at Belle Vue in Manchester last night. 

King will be paraded at Brandon prior to the Bees' home fixture against King's Lynn on Friday, and now also takes the Wild Card place in the British Grand Prix at Cardiff on July.

Pair charged with murder of Coventry man appear in court

Two men have been held in custody after appearing before magistrates in Birmingham today charged with the murder of Coventry man Liam McGerrigan.

The 27-year-old died after suffering stab wounds in Holyhead Road last Thursday.

Michael Bullingham, 33, of Banner Lane, Coventry, and Joseph Johnson, 25, of no fixed address, will now appear at Birmingham Crown Court on Thursday.

Travel: Severe disruption on M40

Two lanes are closed and there's queuing traffic for six miles on the M40 northbound between J12, B4451 (Gaydon) and Warwick Services because of barrier repairs.

Travel time is reported to be around 60 minutes.

There's also one lane closed on the southbound stretch.

Investigation continues after man dies in suspected robbery

A post-mortem is being carried out today on a man who died after a suspected street robbery in Coventry city centre yesterday.

Police found the man, in his 50s, unconscious in Fairfax Street in the city at about 11:00 and he later died in hospital.

They're appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.

Warwickshire squad announced for one-day match with Derbyshire

Warwickshire has named an initial squad of 12 for tomorrow’s One-Day Cup match at Edgbaston against Derbyshire Falcons.

'Oats so dangerous' - police put brakes on brekkie at the wheel

A driver eating porridge was among the hundreds of motorists that police spotted distracted at the wheel on the M6.

During a week-long crackdown on careless drivers last month, motorway officers also stopped a woman applying makeup and a biker steering one-handed as he made a phone call.

In total, 289 people were found using a hand-held device or driving carelessly during the campaign by the Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG).

First-time offenders were offered the chance to attend a driver improvement course, while others were fined and had licences endorsed with three points or faced court action, said police.

Hunt for sex offender who may be travelling via canal system

Police say a sex offender with links to Warwickshire may be using the UK's canal system to move through the country.

Michael Crabb, 53, is being sought after failing to notify police of a change of address following his release from prison. He had been serving a nine-year sentence.

He was last seen in Uxbridge, Middlesex, on March 17.

Detectives say he's been known to seek refuge on barges and is asking the public to call 999 immediately if he's seen.

Coventry holds vigil for Orlando victims

Around 150 people attended a vigil in Coventry on Monday in solidarity with the victims of the massacre in Orlando.

They joined vigils across the UK and around the world in memory of the 49 people killed in a shooting at a gay nightclub.

Met Office weather warning issued for heavy downpours

The Met Office is warning that rising temperatures could trigger some heavy slow-moving downpours across Coventry and Warwickshire.

It says some area may miss them, but where they do occur, there could be localised flooding and disruption to travel - with lightning an additional hazard.

The yellow warning is in place from 10:00 to 22:00.

Two men have been charged with murdering a Coventry man who was stabbed in the chest.

Liam McGerrigan, 27, was pronounced dead after officers were called to Holyhead Road in the city just after 22:00 on Thursday.
