A disabled man was physically and verbally assaulted in Nuneaton in what police are investigating as a hate crime.

The man, in his 20s, was spat at and attacked by a group of men as he entered an alleyway that joins Larch Close on Sunday, 12 March, police say.

The victim was left on the floor as the men left the area around 09:20.

Banned driver 'out for a laugh' during police pursuit

A banned driver said he was "out for a laugh" on his birthday after a high-speed police chase saw him drive the the wrong way around roundabouts and into oncoming traffic through Coventry, police say.

Tony Berrill, of no fixed address, was jailed for 12 months after admitting changes of dangerous driving and driving without a licence.

The 24-year-old eventually ditched the car in Tiverton Road, Coventry, and fled, but his movements were monitored by the police helicopter and officers picked him up in Sewall Highway.

A man who broke his spine jumping out of a window to escape robbers is to run the London Marathon after being told he would never walk again.

Steven Smith, 57, from Stratford-upon-Avon, was attacked on holiday in the south of France in 2011 and has recovered enough to walk with the aid of a stick.

He now aims to complete the marathon in 14 hours raising money for the Nicholls Spinal Injury Foundation.

"I won't be training too much. I think I've only got one marathon in me and don't want to run out of steam too early," he said.

Sixth-form closure decision reversed

The decision to close a Warwickshire sixth-form college has been reversed, said the head, because it could possibly cost more money than it would save.

Trinity School, in Leamington Spa, was under threat of losing it's sixth-form provision due to falling pupil numbers and the government's funding formula, said school governors.

Head teacher Chris Gabbutt said they'd now put in place a "viable plan" to maintain the sixth-form provision and he was "absolutely confident we can put together a curriculum model that will be very attractive".

Highways England says travel time through the site is currently more than an hour, with heavy traffic also reported on the northbound stretch of the motorway.

More than 230 drivers were fined for not wearing their seatbelt during a week-long police crackdown across the West Midlands. 

Officers handed out £100 penalties to 236 motorists.

The force says excuses included a driver claiming they did not believe a seatbelt was required while travelling at 25mph or less, according to police .

M6 to remain closed for investigations into crash

The M6 southbound will remain closed for an investigation into the three-vehicle crash earlier this morning, says Highways England.

They're encouraging motorists to allow extra time for journeys through the area as diversions remain in place between junctions three and two.

Operations manager David Yates said teams were working closely with the emergency services  to carry out work after the crash, involving two lorries and one car.

Drivers are advised to leave the motorway at junction three and travel via the A444, the A428, and the A46 to the M6 junction.

Five injured in M6 crash

One man has been airlifted to hospital, says the ambulance service, after a three-vehicle crash on the M6, which happened at about 08:30.

Fire crews confirm they worked to free one person who was trapped in a vehicle.  

A total of five people have been treated at the scene for injuries.

The northbound carriageways have just reopened, but there are diversions in place for southbound traffic.
