Hundreds of jobs to go as city car firm closes

Caroline Gall

BBC News Online

Up to 500 jobs are to go at an automotive firm that supplies Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) from the car giant's former home on Brown's Lane.

Lawrence Automotive bought the site from JLR in 2010 and began supplying wood trim panelling for various models.

But according to Des Quinn, regional officer for the Unite union, promised investment in key areas by the Chinese owners never happened, placing the firm in "terminal decline".

He says the premises will close in November.

We have commenced the consultation process with our employees which we are legally obliged to do and currently we do not know what the outcome of that process will be. We are fully committed to the consultation process."

The city council's cabinet is recommended to approve plans to overhaul the site with new shop units and affordable housing.

The Home Office said two minors were among the all-male group discovered by police at Mangrove service station on the A45. Police arrested the lorry's 26-year-old driver on suspicion of people trafficking.

The boys, according to the Home Office, have been referred to social services while the remaining men have been detained, with their cases to be processed according to immigration rules.

Three of them needed medical attention and were taken to hospital. They have since been discharged.

Travelling this bank holiday weekend? Here's what you need to know

Riyah Collins

BBC West Midlands

If you’re travelling this bank holiday beyond Coventry and Warwickshire, there will be a few things slowing you down - so here's what you need to know.

Traffic

Highways England, which manages the motorway network, said it would lift or complete about 98% of all work before the bank holiday.

Check here for roadworks updates near you.

If roadworks aren't getting in the way, the five million drivers on the road might be though. Monday is expected to be the busiest day and the most hectic times for travelling are expected to be between 15:00 and 19:00.

If you're getting the train to London, it will take you longer than usual from Coventry and Rugby as there will be no trains in or out of Euston over the weekend because of works on HS2.
