One in five children obese

Earlier we reported that Wolverhampton had a higher rate of young child obesity than anywhere else in England, according to new figures from Public Health England.

As a whole, the West Midlands was also the joint worst region in the country when it came to obesity among four-year-olds.

Even more children are classed as obese by the time they leave primary school - 22.4% across the West Midlands as a whole.

Sandwell was the worst area, with 27.8% of year six children obese. Wolverhampton and Walsall also had high rates.

Rugby, Stratford-upon-Avon and Warwick had among the lowest rates in the region.

Car thieves caught by dropped mobile phone are jailed

Four car thieves, who were caught when one of them dropped his mobile phone, have been jailed at Stafford Crown Court.

Police say the men, who are all from Tamworth, then argued about the dropped phone on Facebook.

Adam Gould (above left), who is 21, and 25-year-old Jimmy Cutler (above right), who now lives in Grimsby, had both pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit burglary - they were jailed for four years and three years and four months respectively.

Philip Thompson (below left), who is 38, pleaded guilty to burglary of commercial premises and handling stolen goods and received two years and four months.

Heath Moran (below right), who is 22, was also jailed for two years and four months after pleading guilty to handling stolen goods, dangerous driving and theft of petrol. He also got a driving ban.

Staffordshire Police says they broke into homes and businesses in Staffordshire and Warwickshire to steal the keys for high-performance cars.

A fifth man, 22-year-old Zak Clark from Tamworth, also pleaded guilty, but failed to appear in court yesterday and a warrant has been issued for his arrest.

These men broke into houses while the occupants slept, specifically to target high-powered cars so they could race them and strip them for parts. They were an organised, close-knit group which preyed on properties across the south of Staffordshire and into neighbouring Warwickshire."

Police say they have extra officers in the Hillfields area of Coventry assisting with the "safe passage" of a funeral procession.

Hundreds of people attended a service in memory of Tyrone Shields, who died in a crash on the A444 last month.

Motorcyclists took part in a procession from St Mary and Benedict's Church in Raglan Street to the burial site in Lenton Lane, passing the site of the crash.

A5 road works in Nuneaton face delay

Work on the A5 in Nuneaton, due to begin over the next two years, is to be delayed to ensure "value for money" says Highways England.

The scheme is one of more than a dozen road improvement projects that have been put back or face cancellation.

The organisation said they were being "paused for further review" to achieve an "acceptable return on investment".

More obese four-year-olds than anywhere else

Wolverhampton has the worst rate of obesity in young children in the country, according to new figures.

Data published by Public Health England shows 13.5% of reception age children in Wolverhampton were classed as obese in 2016-17, compared with 4.8% in Kingston-upon-Thames.

Walsall and Sandwell were also not far behind with 12.6% and 12.1% respectively.

Solihull, Stratford and Shropshire had among the lowest figures in the region.

Major flood defence exercise to be held in Stratford

A temporary flood barrier is to be installed in Stratford-upon-Avon next month as the Environment Agency runs a major flood defence exercise.

Driverless vehicle testing site gets government backing

Plans for a new "world class" testing centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicle (CAV) technology in Warwickshire has received government backing.

The centre at Horiba Mira's facilities in Nuneaton will be set up in conjunction with Coventry University.

The government announcement gives the green light for a new consortium, led by the firm, to pave the way for the new technology.

It said was part of a national strategy to establish the UK as a "global leading centre of excellence for the development, testing and commercialisation of CAVs".
