More flood alerts for region

We now have seven flood alerts around the West Midlands, affecting parts of Worcestershire, Shropshire and Warwickshire.

The river Severn, the Rea and Cound Brooks, the Tern and Perry, the Vyrnwy, the river Worfe the river Blythe and the river Wye are all included in the Environment Agency list this evening.

Extra village police patrols after hare coursing reports

The force says if people do spot the activity, they should "stay a safe distance away".

Coventry Bears set to host rugby league champions

Coventry Bears will celebrate Coventry winning the UK City of Culture title for 2021 by hosting rugby league giants Leeds Rhinos next year.

The match at the Butts Park Arena in January will also celebrate the Bears' 20th anniversary.

Power restored to homes cut off by cold weather

Since the start of the cold weather at the end of last week, engineers from Western Power Distribution had to deal with 609 incidents across the West Midlands - involving tens of thousands of homes and businesses losing electricity.

The company says all those who lost power as a result of the severe weather had their supply restored within 48 hours and the vast majority had power restored much quicker than that.

It also said all snow-related power cuts in the West Midlands region were resolved by yesterday afternoon.

There are still some homes without power, but the company says those aren't cold weather related.

Four masked men armed with knives have robbed a supermarket in Leamington Spa.

They went into the Tesco Express store on Cubbington Road last night and threatened staff, Warwickshire Police says.

Officers say they tried to get into the safe and, when they couldn't, took cash from the tills before making off in a 4x4 vehicle.

Two decommissioned machine guns among surrendered firearms

Rifles, shotguns, revolvers and two decommissioned machine guns were among 245 firearms handed in to West Midlands Police last month.

The force said it was "really pleased" with the response to the two-week campaign.

More than 100 of the guns were still operational and they will now be destroyed.

The deactivated weapons included a World War Two "tommy gun" and an SK47, which the force said could easily have been put back into use.

The parents of missing Coventry mother Nicola Payne say they are handing over the search for her to the next generation.

Marilyn Payne told BBC Coventry and Warwickshire she and her husband are getting too old to keep going and Nicola's nephews and nieces are taking up the campaign.

With tomorrow marking the 26th anniversary of Nicola's disappearance, her brother Scott says they're trying to make more use of social media.

The mother-of-one, who was 18 at the time, went missing while walking to her parents' house.

They've come up with a new video for Facebook and they're launching the new website, Find Nicola Payne and all the different media platforms are find Nicola Payne."

Peter Kay cancels comeback comedy tour for family reasons

Comedian Peter Kay has cancelled his mammoth stand-up tour, which was due to start in April in Birmingham, "due to unforeseen family circumstances".

"This decision has not been taken lightly and I'm sure you'll understand my family must always come first," he wrote on Twitter.

Kay's cancelled all future work projects which also includes several Dance for Life events, one of which was to be in Coventry.

The 44-year-old was due to start his first tour in eight years next April with several dates at the Genting Arena, Birmingham.

Another warning of ice has been issued for much of the West Midlands with the Met Office warning of icy stretches on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.

It says the yellow alert runs from 16:00 today until 11:00 tomorrow.

The Met Office says there could also be more wintry showers bringing snow although that'll mostly be on higher ground.

Five libraries in Warwickshire face having their opening hours cut under the county council's latest savings plans.

The local authority wants to reduce the hours at the sites in Lillington, Whitnash, Kenilworth, Warwick and Shire Hall.

The council's also considering using self-service machines in some libraries to save more cash.

Reward increased to £30k in Nicola Payne appeal

The family of missing Coventry mother Nicola Payne is launching a new website to appeal for information to mark the 26th anniversary of her disappearance.

The mother-of-one was last seen in 1991, on 14 December, on her way to her parents' house in the city.

Her family has not only created a website but increased the reward money from £10,000 to £30,000 for any information leading to the recovery of Nicola's body.

There's some rain around over night but still feeling very cold, with a yellow warning of ice in place until 11:00 on Wednesday.

It won't be quite as cold as last night, but still expect lows of about -1C (30F).

Branson urged to meet unions over Virgin West Coast pay row

Union leaders are urging Sir Richard Branson to intervene in a dispute over pay which is set to spark a series of strikes on Virgin Trains West Coast, affecting services from London to Birmingham.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) and Transport Salaried Staffs Association (TSSA) are due to walk out on Friday and the following Friday, and on four dates in January.

The RMT said it wanted a "suitable and equal" pay offer to the £500 one given to drivers.

The company said it would keep the majority of trains running despite the industrial action.

Train lines reopen after lorry hits bridge

Blocked railways lines have been reopened after a lorry hit a bridge earlier today.

Network Rail engineers have now repaired the track between Attleborough and Thetford after the lorry struck the railway bridge near Eccles Road station at about 05:30.

Debris was strewn on to the line, causing major disruption for Greater Anglia and East Midlands Trains passengers on services between Norwich and Cambridge.

Cancellations and delays are expected until 15:00, according to National Rail Enquiries - which has updates to affected trains here.

Fresh weather warning for ice issued

The problems with ice are set to continue into tomorrow, says the Met Office, which has issued a new weather warning.

The warning - for the whole of the West Midlands - covers 16:00 on Tuesday until 11:00 Wednesday.

Hundreds still without power

There are 220 homes still without power in the West Midlands, says Western Power Distribution.

It says engineers are currently working on power cuts in Herefordshire but earlier problems in Wolverhampton and Coventry have been resolved.


Gritters out in force

Councils have been gritting the roads across the West Midlands.

Coventry City Council says it's dropped 200 tonnes of salt over night.

Key pedestrian routes have also been treated, but local authorities are warning drivers and walkers to take extra care in the icy conditions.

Bin collections suspended in Coventry

Due to the severe weather conditions all bin collections in Coventry have been suspended, the city council says.

There are 45 schools closed in the city too.

Hundreds of schools remain closed

Hundreds of schools and academies across the West Midlands are closed for a second consecutive day due the extreme winter weather.

More than 200 schools in Shropshire and Telford are listed as shut today, with more than 60 in Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

There are also closures listed in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire,Wolverhampton, and Sandwell, along with about 60 in Warwickshire.

Twenty or so schools remain closed in Coventry, while Birmingham City Council says it's left the decision up to individual schools.

That's the classrooms rounded up, then. We'll let you know about rail, roads and buses throughout the morning.

Last night's freezing temperatures mean there could be icy stretches on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths, the Met Office says.

The weather warning for ice is in place for the whole of the West Midlands until 11:00.
