£25,000 grants to reduce waste

Grants of up to £25,000 could be made available through the Waste Prevention Fund for projects which help reduce wastes such as food, textiles, paper and board, plastics, electronic and electrical equipment, furniture, building and demolition waste and healthcare and chemical waste.

What are Christmas tree aphids?

Aphids are harmless, according to principal lecturer in biosciences at Nottingham Trent University, Chris Terrell-Nield. "Christmas trees are living things. They are grown outside in the big outdoors under forest conditions and they can be exposed to all sorts of inhabitants."

Christmas tree aphids invade Derby couple's home

Thousands of tiny

insects have invaded a couple's home after eggs hatched on their Christmas tree.

Andy and Stacey Sykes discovered the aphids all over their lounge floor, soon after bringing a fir tree home from Ikea in Nottingham.

The pair, from Derby, have now had to chop up their tree just days before Christmas after Mrs Sykes said they made her feel "crawly".

Plans to build 27 homes in Matlock

A developer has applied to

build 27 homes on a Matlock site - while contributing to affordable housing in the district.

Wheeldon Brothers Ltd has submitted a planning application to Derbyshire Dales District Council to build the homes on land north west of Moorcroft, Matlock.

The company says it's experienced a reduction in demand from some supermarkets in the run-up to Christmas.

The retailer, which has 249 stores, has also experienced short-term problems at its centralised warehouse in Alfreton resulting in lost and late sales.

Fake alcohol warning

People in Staffordshire are

being warned about counterfeit alcohol sales in the run up to Christmas.

The council says the drinks can contain hazardous levels of methanol which can cause blindness.

The Conservatives in opposition say the survey was set up in such a way as to make the findings worthless.

Thorntons shares slumped by 25% when the London stock market opened, dropping by 30p to 86p.

The Derbyshire firm which has its head office in Alfreton says lower sales in the run-up to Christmas will depress the whole year's profits.

Last year, the company made £7.5m in pre-tax profits and as recently as recently as October told investors it expected to make annual profits of nearly £10m for the year 2014-15.

THE owner of a beauty salon has been fined £2,500 after

six children fell ill after using a bacteria-infested spa pool in Swadlincote.

Lisa Matthews was told that she had been 'negligent' during a hearing at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court after it was revealed four of the girls complained of earache and all reported an itchy, painful rash all over their bodies following a birthday pampering party at Kensington Salon and Spa, in Midland Road, in May 2013.

Where should council cuts be made?

According to Derby City Council's

budget simulator it suggests the public think cuts should be made to libraries, museums and other local services.

Since July the council has been asking the public about where it should made savings as it seeks to cut £60m over the next three years.

No city bin collections

Just a reminder that bins in Derby are not being collected in the week between Christmas and new year.

This means collections will be slightly different when they get under way again.

Derby Women's Centre so vital work on the Leopold Street building can be completed.

The centre's future had been in doubt because it was crumbling - with a badly damaged roof and basement.

Derbyshire is to receive almost £100,000.
