Weather: Potentially tricky driving conditions this evening

A band of rain, which will be heavy at times, will move northeastwards early this evening potentially causing some tricky driving conditions during the evening rush hour. 

Later there’ll be variable amounts of cloud with isolated showers. Lows of 3C (37F).

This is the scene in Walbrook Road in Normanton after a car crashed into a house earlier.

Nobody inside the property was injured but a female passenger in the car has been treated for chest pains.

Fugitive prisoner recaptured and sentenced

A prisoner who went on the run from an open prison has been recaptured and sentenced.

Shane Stroughton was given six months after he admitted escaping unlawful custody.

The 27-year-old left HMP Sudbury on February 23 and was arrested a few hours later.

He was in jail for causing grievous bodily harm.

The property is badly damaged but it's not thought anyone was inside.

Man injured in Burton hit-and-run

A man from Burton is in hospital after a hit and run in East Staffordshire on Easter Sunday. 

It happened just before 05:00 on Belvedere Road between the Shell Garage and the junction with Mona Road. 

The 25 year old was found in the road with leg and head injuries.

He was taken to hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

Ayeeshia Jane Smith murder trial: Accused says 'I would never hurt her'

A man accused of the murder of a 21-month-old child in Burton has told a court today: "I've done nothing but love that child, I would never hurt her".

Matthew Rigby, the ex-partner of Ayeeshia's mother Kathryn Smith, who is also accused, was asked at Birmingham Crown Court if he killed the child. He said: "No never". 

Mr Rigby, 22, of Sloan Drive, Nottingham and Ms Smith, 23, of Sandfield Road, Nottingham, both deny murder, allowing or causing a child's death and child cruelty.

The trial continues.

The council has filled 623 bags with rubbish found in the verges.

It was collected in a three-night clean-up that takes place once a year.

It's estimated to have cost the council about £18,500.

Robber targets 73-year-old man

An elderly man has been robbed in Babington Lane in Derby.

The robber pushed his 73-year-old victim against a wall on Thursday morning and the pair struggled as the thief tried to take the man's bag. He got away with his wallet.

'Cash for crash' suspects appear in court

A total of 16 people have appeared in court to face charges relating to an alleged insurance scam involving staged car crashes in and around Derby. 

Officers say the suspects were involved in insurance claims relating to eight deliberate collisions.

They were all granted unconditional bail and will be back in court when their trial begins on 26 April.

Children face firearms charges

Derbyshire Constabulary said the 10-year-old boy was charged with the firearm offence, as were five other children in the county.

In Staffordshire, seven under-18's were charged with firearm offences between 2013-2016.

Late penalty rescues Alfreton Town

Alfreton Town are 10 points outside the play-off places in National League North and look to be heading for a mid-table finish.

Dan Bradley's late penalty rescued a point for them at Gainsborough Trinity last night.

However six years ago there were 865 paid staff working in them, now there are 546.

Looking now at libraries because a BBC investigation has found that almost 8,000 jobs in UK libraries have disappeared in the past six years.

That's around a quarter of the overall total.

As a whole, the East Midlands has lost 36% of its jobs in libraries, the biggest percentage drop in the UK.

In Derbyshire, the county council has kept the fewest full-time library staff compared to neighbouring counties.

Red Arrow change upsets passengers

As you can imagine, many people aren't happy they can no longer travel from Nottingham to Derby on the Red Arrow for free.

One woman told BBC Radio Derby she loves coming to Derby and uses the bus from Nottingham once a week, but now she'll come less often.

Another said: "I don't really understand why they're doing it. I can still travel on the Indigo and the i4 but they'll take an hour-and-a-half so it will make a difference. I'll be more likely to shop in Derby."

Red Arrow switch will save council £80,000

So why can pensioners no longer ride the Red Arrow from Nottingham to Derby for free.

Well, Nottingham City Council says it doesn't feel it can continue to subsidise concessionary travel on what it sees as a "premium service".

It says the decision will help it save £80,000, which could be used to fund local community bus services in Nottingham.

If you're a pensioner and you use your bus pass to get the Red Arrow to Nottingham, you'll soon have to pay £4 to come home. 

It's because Nottingham City Council has excluded the Nottingham to Derby service from its list of routes bus pass holders can use for free.

So from Friday, you'll be able to get the Red Arrow to Nottingham for free but not back home again.
