Man pleads guilty to manslaughter of pensioner

A 23-year-old man has pleaded guilty to manslaughter after the death of a 71-year-old Derby man who was attacked on Mercian Way.

Melvyn Hargreaves died from head injuries two days after the assault in January last year.

Samuel Watts of Forman Street in Derby admitted manslaughter when he appeared at Nottingham Crown Court today and was remanded in custody. He'll be sentenced on 6 May.

Random attack on woman in street

Police in East Staffordshire are looking for a man who got out of his car and attacked a woman as she was walking down Hall Lane in Middle Mayfield.

The offender was driving a small dark coloured car with a noisy exhaust when the assault happened early on Sunday morning.

Rule breaches ahead of elections

The returning officer for the elections in Derby says there have been breaches of the rules which candidates have to adhere to.

Rules about printed leaflets have been broken, and an email sent by one councillor to all of the other councillors has been deemed as a breach.

The city council’s also investigating the use of local authority resources.

Three arrested after farm building fire

Officers have arrested three people after a fire in an old farm building off the Coach Road at Ripley which was started deliberately.

An 18-year-old girl was rescued from the building and was treated in hospital for smoke inhalation.

Police say two girls, aged 17 and 18, and a 20-year-old man have been arrested on suspicion of arson.

Brewers winless run goes on

Never mind the play-off being a tense affair, for Burton Albion fans it's already a nail biting end to the season as the club tries to clinch promotion to the Championship.

Police were called to a property in Whysall Street where a 21-year-old man was found inside with a puncture wound to his chest.

A fire which badly damaged a bungalow at Alvaston started when a computer overheated.

I could see flames on the computer desk, which was in the bedroom where I was. It took a matter of seconds to spread. That was when I had to get out of the house quickly. I've had a lucky escape."
