More politics of pool closure

Euan Duncan

BBC Local Live

Labour's Ranjit Banwait said: "Queen's Leisure Centre has had to close on health and safety grounds. During an inspection structural engineers discovered movement with the roof and a decision was made based on their advice to close the pool and carry out repairs without risk to the public. This is a temporary closure while repairs are carried out."

The Liberal Democrats have yet to respond.

Political stance over swimming baths closure

Euan Duncan

BBC Local Live

If you're wondering what the main political parties in Derby think about the Queen's Leisure Centre closure, here's what we've been told.

Conservatives’ Matthew Holmes said: “We warned Labour they were taking a huge risk by choosing to close Moorways Pool while there were significant issues with Queen's Street Baths. Considering the relatively modest saving made by closing Moorways pool I would call on the administration to reopen it."

UKIP’s Alan Graves said: “UKIP are the only party to have voted against the closure of Moorways and put an amendment to save the pool from closure for another year. The situation with Queen's Leisure Centre proves that it was a terrible decision for the people of Derby."

Roof issue first emerged last year

Euan Duncan

BBC Local Live

I can't tell you at this stage how long the Queen's Leisure Centre in Derby will be shut.

The family pool has been out of action since November after the city council became aware of an issue with the roof.

Christine Durrant, from the local authority, revealed that a new problem was discovered during a routine inspection yesterday.

She said: "The structural engineers saw that the roof had moved and they became concerned that we couldn't predict what was likely to happen.

"And therefore, on health and safety grounds, we just had no choice but to to close the pool temporarily until we can do some further assessment."

The former Derventio star was hopeful of racing at the London Olympics, but narrowly missed out on being chosen.

Pool needs to reopen 'tomorrow'

Regular pool user Janet spoke to BBC Radio Derby about the temporary closure of Queen's Leisure Centre in Derby, having learnt to swim there 40 years ago.

She's unhappy: "Whatever needs doing needs to be done tomorrow and it needs opening. I feel so strongly about it.

"The schools use it, there's clubs, there's the blind, people with heart conditions. When they say we need to keep fit, I walk down every morning. I'm 65, there are people in there that are 95.

Leisure centre roof 'has been problem for years'

Facebook

The temporary closure of Queen's Leisure Centre in Derby has provoked a lot of reaction on our Facebook page.

Claire Louise Simmill said: "No surprise, roof has been a problem for a few years. Derby City Council isn't interested in what the people of Derby want. It's only interested in funding the velodrome (waste of money) and Springwood Leisure Centre."

And Sarah Hitchcock posted: "What about us that have paid up front for lessons for our children? Not even been contacted by them to say the place is closed. I hope this doesn't turn into yet another useful building in Derby that is left to fall into disrepair. Or maybe it will be turned into another block of flats as Derby really needs more of those."
