Better air quality would save lives, say MPs

MPs say faster action is needed to improve air quality in towns and cities.

They want more cities to benefit from the enhanced powers being granted to Derby and Nottingham in the East Midlands, and to other cities including London and Birmingham.  

The environment, food and rural affairs committee believes up to 50,000 deaths a year could be prevented by reducing pollution.

70 years since Rams' FA Cup win

It's well before my time, but 70 years ago today Derby County won the FA Cup.

The Rams beat Charlton 4-1 in 1946 after extra time, with Jack Stamps scoring twice.

Cake fragments make £760 at auction

A buyer forked out a mouth-watering £760 for fragments of Queen Victoria's wedding cake at an auction in Derbyshire.

The remains were found in a small parchment sealed with green and red wax in a chest of items belonging to Naval Lieutenant Robert Sayer, and were offered for sale by a descendant.

The cake was auctioned by Hansons on 1 April, and the Etwall firm said it certainly wasn't an April Fool joke.

Care home shop's flavour of comedy classic

A number of Conservative MPs say they'll use a House of Commons debate to criticise the government's plans for introducing elected mayors in rural areas of England.

It includes having one elected mayor for Derby, Derbyshire, Notingham and Nottinghamshire under the current proposals.

Rams set to face Hull for Wembley place

The Rams will have to win the play-offs to achieve that ambition, and it seems certain they'll face Hull City over two legs in the semi-finals, after the Tigers beat Brentford 2-0 last night.

Congratulations to Alfreton Town who lifted the Derbyshire Senior Cup Trophy last night, after a 4-3 penalty shootout win against Belper Town.

The Reds were pushed all the way by the Nailers, who play two levels below their opponents in the league system.

Rain, sleet, snow and bad light ... it sounds like the middle of winter, but those were all contributing factors to yesterday's cricket action in Derby.

Ice had to be scraped off the covers ahead of play, and by the close Derbyshire's cricketers were 331-9 in reply to Glamorgan's first innings total of 377 all out.

Derby Urgent Care Centre's business manager says people may have stayed away yesterday because they were worried about waiting times during the junior doctors' strike.  

Catherine Flynn said: "I think patients are trying to hold off because maybe they think it's going to be overly busy. They may be holding off until later in the week. We have got increased staff again just in case there's a knock-on effect.

Moorways unlikely to open to all

It doesn't appear that Moorways Swimming Pool will be open to everyone again, following the closure of Queen's Leisure Centre.

Derby City Council will continue to look at ways of allowing schools to use Moorways and plans to arrange swimming lessons there from the middle of May.

The council's director of leisure and culture Claire Davenport said: access to some parts of Moorways has been restricted since it closed, and it would need money spending to reduce the potential risks to pool users.
