More swimming clubs to use Moorways

So there's still no promise yet to reopen Moorways Swimming Pool to the public, but a Derby City Council spokeswoman says it remains their aim. 

For now, access to Moorways will be opened up to other clubs beyond Derventio which has been continuing to use the facilities.

In a statement, the council says: "This is only currently possible because the environment can be controlled and because club members and coaches can be trained on the health and safety issues."

The local authority also says: "Our ambition is to restart swimming lessons the week before the Whitsun half-term break."

Derby City Council has confirmed it wants to reopen Moorways Swimming Pool but is still looking into the best way it can be done safely.

In a statement, the local authority says it needs to address health and safety issues at the centre.

Moorways was shut earlier this year for financial reasons but pressure has grown for it to be used again because roof problems have led to the closure of the Queen's Leisure Centre swimming baths. 

Chernobyl radiation issues 'as bad as before'

Local football is in the spotlight tonight as it's the Derbyshire Senior Cup final at Ilkeston FC's New Manor Ground.

Alfreton Town face Belper Town, the sides have met twice before at this stage of the competition, with the Nailers winning both times.

The two previous finals were played over two legs in 1979/80 and 2007/8, which was the last time the Reds reached the final.

Today's junior doctors' strike is likely to put extra pressure on Derby's Urgent Care Centre in Osmaston Road.

Mark Shepherd, the centre's chief operations officer, said increased staffing today means there will be an extra cost.

"That's something that is part of our offering to the services. We work closely with the commissioners as well to ensure that across the network we ensure the price is in the right place, that the spending of the money for the NHS is as wise as possible.

Strike action 'last resort' for junior doctors

Outside the Royal Derby Hospital, junior doctor Lisa Kiellor said none of them want to be on the picket line.

She said: "I feel very uncomfortable with strike action in itself, but we feel as junior doctors that this is a last resort and that actually we didn't have any other option than to take this step."

"None of us would ever disagree that we aren't paid reasonably for the job that we do and if this was just about pay then I wouldn't be striking today.

"My issue is with the safety aspect of this contract and the effects that it will have on patient safety."

Moorways decision could be made today

Swimmers have been left in the lurch by the sudden closure of Queen's Leisure Centre in Derby, but the city council says it could be in a position to say later today whether Moorways pool will reopen.

Moorways was shut earlier this year for financial reasons but a swimming club was allowed to continue using the facilities on a short-term basis.

Repairs to start at unsafe leisure centre

The cranes have still to arrive but a demolition company's vans are now outside Queen's Leisure Centre in Derby.

Claire Davenport, from Derby City Council, says the work being done now couldn't have been started when the problems with the roof were first spotted back in November.

"It's progressive, so originally we were looking at doing the scaffolding work inside the building.

Palladino takes 5-83 to peg back Glamorgan

Tony Palladino's tenth five-wicket haul for Derbyshire was the highlight of a rain-affected second day against Glamorgan in the County Championship.

Hillsborough verdict: 96 fans 'unlawfully killed'

And news just in that the jury finds that the 96 victims of the Hillsborough disaster were unlawfully killed.

The jury found that the 96 Liverpool supporters died from crushing in the central pens on the terracing.

So no emergency cover from junior doctors today as they begin two days of strike action.

Nigel Sturrock is the medical director at the Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and said: "We've developed a good plan which we have put in place with our consultants our specialty doctors, our therapists, pharmacists, advanced clinical practitioners to look after our patients on the wards and also to provide emergency cover.

"But it's an untested plan. This is unchartered territory. "We've never had a place where we've had no junior doctors on shift.

Road closure to accompany leisure centre repairs

Away from the picket lines today, there's more news about the closure of Queen's Leisure Centre in Derby.

The city council has signed a contract with Bowmer and Kirkland to carry out repair work to the roof to make the building safe.
