Weather: Rain arrives by the morning

A dry evening ahead, but cloud increases from the west bringing outbreaks of rain by dawn, with a minimum temperature overnight of 10C (50F).

It's a wet start tomorrow and there's heavy rain at times, although brighter spells should develop through the afternoon.

Natural burials 'growing in popularity'

Tracey Baxter manages the Dale Hill site in Spondon which is the first all-natural burial ground in Derby.

She says: "People are choosing more natural ways, so they're trying to find a way to make minimal impact on our natural world.

"In its early stages, it's a young nature reserve. We are intending to plant memorial trees, but the idea is it will look like a beautiful natural environment."

Auctioneers consider legal route over cattle market

Auctioneers hoping to take over Derby's cattle market will now be consulting their lawyers after their bids to lease the building were turned down.

The city council said it would rather demolish the market site after none of the bids were deemed acceptable, but auctioneer Alistair Sneddin says it shows a disregard for farmers.

Natural burial ground opens

Dale Hill, at Locko Park, in Spondon won't allow headstones or chemicals such as embalming fluid, so any coffins must be biodegradable.

New primary schools in Ashbourne

Three new primary schools are to be created in Ashbourne.

The town's junior and infant schools will be transformed into primaries after local people backed the county council's plans.

The cabinet is expected to agree to the reorganisation when it meets next Tuesday. 

Children's home operating 'illegally' as school

Police name drivers who died in Snake Pass crash

Police have named the two drivers who died in a crash on the A57 Snake Pass in the Peak District.

Ehtisham Hanif, 29, from Sheffield, who was driving a BMW, and Joshua Rosenberg, 18, of Winsford, who was driving a Honda, were killed in a three-vehicle accident on Sunday evening.

Five other people were seriously injured and taken to hospital. Two other vehicles collided in the aftermath of the initial crash.  

Queen to visit National Memorial Arboretum

The Queen is visiting the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire today. 

As Colonel-in-Chief to The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment, she'll lay a wreath at a new monument to those who've died serving in it.

Ashley to meet MPs if they come to Derbyshire first

The boss of Sports Direct has agreed to be questioned by MPs over his working practices, but only if they visit his Derbyshire headquarters first.

Mike Ashley was ordered to explain his treatment of workers at the company's Shirebrook warehouse by the Business Select Committee in March.

Many are on "zero hours contracts" with claims that some effectively get less than the minimum wage.

I'm not sure that we've moved any further forward than a year ago when we reported that the cattle and wholesale markets in Derby were to be demolished.

But as I'm no expert on local authority procedures here's the city council's deputy leader Martin Rawson to explain what will happen next.

He said: "If people want to continue to provide a cattle market as a private enterprise there will be every opportunity for them to bid into the next stage of the process and to purchase the site."
