Marines' memorial march to the Somme

Euan Duncan

BBC Local Live

It's best foot forward for three former Royal Marines who are part way through a 650-mile commemorative walk from the UK to the battlefields of the Somme.

It's to mark the 100th anniversary of the battle and on the way they'll be collecting crosses with soldiers' names to be laid out when they get to France.

Armitstead in pole position to win Women's Tour

Does this constitute a selfie? I can't say I blame them for capturing the moment ... and is that the yellow jersey Lizzie Armitstead's wearing?

Her stage win today has presumably propelled her to the overall race leader's position. I'll update you with the full details later.

'Bring your wellies' for family cycling festival

Euan Duncan

BBC Local Live

At the start of the day I mentioned two cycling events in Derbyshire this weekend. Away from the Women's Tour 2016, there's news of the other one.

Organisers of the Eroica Britannia family festival at Bakewell Showground say the venue is in good condition.

Only bikes made before 1987 are accepted at the Eroica Britannia family festival

But they are suggesting people might want to bring wellies, as it’s a bit damp underfoot. That might be an understatement after the week we've had.

MPs 'have to shrug off' threats

Euan Duncan

BBC Local Live

Hard to come to terms today with the death yesterday of Labour MP Jo Cox, who was shot and stabbed in the street.

The Conservative MP for Burton, Andrew Griffths, was on Parliament's Kashmir committee with her and when asked how common it was for MPs to receive threats, he said: "It's a regular occurrence and actually you just shrug it off.

"If I called the police every time I got a letter that was threatening or intimidating then I'd be on the phone to the police on a regular basis."
