Hospital boss apologises over Ricky Hill death

The chief executive of Derby's hospital trust has apologised for the death of Ricky Hill, a patient who was found dead near the Royal Derby Hospital.

An inquest, which ended yesterday, found failings at the hospital and with the subsequent police search. 

Derby Teaching Hospital's chief executive Gavin Boyle said the trust was sorry Mr Hill died while in the hospital's care and said lessons have been learned.

The graffiti tags were daubed on two trailers and a tanker in a field off Holmesfield Road near to Birchin Lee Nurseries in Dronfield Woodhouse.

School closures kept to minimum during teacher strike

Details have been released about the number of schools affected by today's NUT strike.

In Derby around 40 schools are either closed or partially closed.

Derbyshire County Council sent out 416 surveys to all of the schools in the county. Seven were closed and 35 partially closed out of 181 which responded. Four academies are partly closed.

Soaring cost of plan to reduce A52 congestion

The cost of reducing congestion on the A52 near Pride Park has increased by more than £2m.

The dual carriageway's set to have a lower speed limit but the city council says enforcing it will cost half a million pounds, while the bill for moving utilities under the road has risen by £1.7 million.

Police are warning residents after a dog died from suspected anti-freeze poisoning at Regent Court in Ironville.

Fire crews remain on East Street

We've had a bit more detail through on why fire crews have been on East Street.

A fire service spokeswoman said they were called to the area by a caretaker who reported smoke in the basement of a building.

She said there was a build-up of carbon monoxide gas and fire officers were currently ventilating the buildings.

Ricky Hill inquest: Coroner to suggest national changes

More on the Ricky Hill inquest ... Derby Coroners' Court heard nurses lacked training in dealing with mental health patients at the Royal Derby Hospital and they had not been told about hospital guidelines.

Coroner Dr Robert Hunter concluded there was no plan at the hospital to prevent him killing himself, and said he would write to the Department of Health suggesting changes are made at all hospitals.

Two fire engines are at the scene and everything appears to be under control now.

Out-of-date map used in search for Ricky Hill

The inquest into the death of Ricky Hill from Alfreton heard about some of the things that went wrong after he walked out of the Royal Derby Hospital and took his own life.

It emerged that the first police officer on the scene searched the site in a police car using an incorrect description.

Another officer later used an out-of-date satellite image from Google Earth to check the site, which still showed the hospital under construction.
