Police pledge to tackle 101 problems

Derbyshire Police said it's working hard to resolve problems with its 101 non-emergency number.

It comes after some callers have been experiencing a delay in getting through - or have been cut off during the conversation.

Assistant Chief Constable Chris Haward said: "I would ask for your patience while we do everything we can to resolve the problem as quickly as possible."

The 999 number has not been affected.

Ralph's previous owners sentenced

Paula Watson and Andrew James, both of St Michael's Street, Sutton-in-Ashfield, were sentenced at Mansfield Magistrates' Court last week after being found guilty in their absence of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal and duty of person responsible for animal to ensure welfare.

Watson received an eight-week suspended sentence, was ordered to do 80 hours of unpaid work and told to pay £250 in costs.

James was handed an immediate eight-week prison sentence and ordered to pay an £80 victim surcharge. Both were disqualified from keeping animals for life.

Neglected three-legged dog seeking new home

An 11-month-old dog who had to have his leg amputated after being neglected by his previous owners is being looking after in Derby while he tries to find a new home.

Ralph, a Staffordshire bull terrier cross, was rescued from a home in Nottinghamshire by an RSPCA inspector in February. 

He had a fractured left back leg, three broken ribs and a fractured pelvis which had gone untreated for at least 10 days. It's not known for certain how he sustained the injuries.

Campaigners criticise Peak tunnel plans

But The Campaign for Better Transport has hit out at the plans, saying the tunnel would increase pollution.

Bridget Fox, from the group, said: "The enormous sums of money and expertise being spent on this speculative exercise would be better used on proven solutions and improving everyday travel."

Peak tunnel route plans announced

Five possible routes for a tunnel that would bore through the Peak District between Sheffield and Manchester have been unveiled.

The Department for Transport (DfT) said the tunnel could halve journey times between the two cities.

Rams boss tight-lipped on transfers

Nigel Pearson, now addressing the media, has not given anything away regarding potential transfers.

"In regards to our transfer speculation, we'll make statements when it's appropriate," he said.

"I have already said we'll add players if they're the right players. I'm trying to improve the quality here."

Derby boss wants 'healthy competition'

Manager Nigel Pearson (pictured) has told Derby County's club website he wants to see healthy competition for places.

Ahead of the Rams' clash with Aston Villa at the weekend, Pearson said: "I want healthy competition amongst the squad and if players play well they have a better chance of staying in the team.

"Everybody has to earn the right to be there and if we do that then we can weather the more difficult times."

Building collapse at 'fly crisis' waste site

A resident who lives near the Slack Lane waste site in Derby has been in touch to say a shed there has collapsed on top of a pick-up truck.

Waste is being cleared from the site after causing a recent fly infestation across a large part of the city.

It's not thought anyone was injured by the building collapse.

Residents are being encouraged to come to Derby Theatre today and help build a theatre set made from lego - a sentence I didn't think I'd be writing on a Thursday morning.

It's part of the Nuketown - a protest storytelling and art project that begins on 30 September that looks at what you could build with £205bn, equal in value to the proposed Trident nuclear submarine replacement programme.

Group spit in bus driver's face and brick window

Derbyshire Police want to identify these three men after a rather unpleasant (putting it lightly) incident.

Five men approached a bus in Osmaston Road in Derby on Saturday 9 July at 05:00 BST.

The men began to mess around with the emergency exit at the back of the bus. The driver challenged them and one of them spat in her face.

One of the group then threw a brick through the bus window and another kicked and spat at the bus.

One of the passengers filming the men was then racially abused.

Boy, 16, arrested after police hoax calls

A teenager has been arrested after four hoax calls were made to police in two hours - including an allegation that a man had been stabbed.

All the calls, made last night between 18:00 BST and 20:00 BST, related to alleged incidents in Ilkeston.

Officers found a group of youths in Jonny's Park, Wash Meadow play area, Rutland Street, and arrested the boy. 

He has been released on bail pending further inquiries.

Cyclists riding from Yorkshire to London are stopping over near Matlock as they raise money for charities supported by the late MP Jo Cox.

Ms Cox, 41, died after being attacked in West Yorkshire in June. A man has been charged with her murder.

A man was taken to hospital after being assaulted in a fight with another man, Derbyshire Police said.

The man was punched in the head at 19:55 BST yesterday outside Ladbrokes in Derby city centre.

He was taken to hospital and a section of Iron Gate was cordoned off while blood was cleaned from the pavement.
