A man from Derbyshire has been jailed for his part in the violent theft of a pug puppy from a dog breeder in Wales.

Martin Stokes, 23, from Derbyshire was sentenced to 10 months in prison after admitting conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

Thomas Stokes, 47, from Mansfield in Nottinghamshire, who had recently been living on a travellers' site in Newport, was sentenced to five years in prison after admitting theft and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.  

Fight goes on to save former cattle market

Farmers in Derbyshire say they won't stop fighting to prevent the demolition of Derby's old cattle market.

The final auction was held in June after the city council said the site was no longer financially viable. 

Now campaigners have put in an application to get the site recognised as an Asset of Community Value. 

They say this will buy them more time to try to save it.

Analysis: Killed backpacker emanates 'love and light'

Thomas Jackson suffered critical head injuries trying to help fellow Briton Mia Ayliffe-Chung at a hostel at Home Hill, south of Townsville. 

It's reported he attempted to shield her in a bathroom.

Australian police have said Frenchman Smail Ayad will now face two charges of murder. He is due to appear before magistrates again in October. 

His father, Les, who had travelled to Queensland to be with his son, said "there is dark and evil in this world perpetrated by a few, but so much more love and light emanates from so many more".

Deal to be completed for Kodjia?

Mia's ashes to be 'scattered round the world'

Mia's mum Rosie Ayliffe has been speaking about how her daughter's ashes will be scattered around the world so she "can visit places" she will now never discover.

Writing in the Independent, Ms Ayliffe said: "I know some of her friends are struggling with that (the decision to cremate her 'sooner rather than later'), because they wanted her body brought home and a cremation or burial here in the Wirksworth area, but she has friends all over the place."

"There are many and varied reasons why we are, and always will be, immensely proud of Tom," his father Les said.
