Facebook

Our Facebook has attracted lots of comments on the plans to transform Duckworth Square into an ice rink. Here's a few:

Jenny Cooper said: "Personally I do like the idea of an ice rink. That said, however, I think that with limited funds, the money would be better spent on getting a decent swimming facility available again."

Sir Maurice Oldfield cleared of child abuse

Dave Wade

The family of a former spy chief, from Over Haddon, have been talking about how "devastating" it's been to have child abuse allegations hanging over his illustrious career for over 30 years.

Sir Maurice Oldfield is widely regarded as one of MI6's top chiefs. He even inspired Alec Guinness' portrayal of George Smiley in the BBC version of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

But allegations about his private life surfaced after his death in 1981 and he was linked to abuse at a Belfast boys' home.

In January the Historical Institutional Abuse Inquiry concluded that the allegations had "no substance".

His great-nephew, Martin Pearce, who's written a biography of Mr Oldfield said the impact has been "devastating" and "heartbreaking" but now the family can move on and celebrate the life of a great man.
