Firm 'illegally felled' protected trees

Neil Heath

BBC News Online

A company has been served with a court injunction after protected trees were cut down at a caravan park in the Derwent Valley.

Amber Valley Borough Council visited Haytop Country Park, Whatstandwell, on Friday, and told workers the trees were subject to Tree Preservation Orders.

However, despite being told to "stop immediately", the authority said workers cut down more over the weekend.

The BBC has made several attempts to contact the park's owners Countrywide Park Homes for a comment.

The Leicestershire-based firm bought the site, which has 60 pitches for touring and static caravans, in October.

Complications in fixing Chester Green burst water main

Khia Lewis-Todd

BBC Local Live

This 10-inch wide pipe - which burst at the weekend, damaging homes - has caused Severn Trent workers a bit of a headache.

Because the pipe has an unusual curve and isn't a standard fitting, it's taking longer to fix the problem on Mansfield Road in Chester Green than expected.

A spokesman said they need to make sure nothing is there that shouldn't be and they are making sure everything is clear from a larger pipe which the 10-inch pipe connects to.

But they are confident the service will resume later on today.

Householders experiencing low pressure will find things back to normal once the repair is complete.

The road closure will remain closed and may reopen by the weekend Severn Trent said.

Derby expected to see school funding rise

Khia Lewis-Todd

BBC Local Live

Derby is one of the areas expected to see the total funding shared by schools to rise by about 2.4%  in the first year of the biggest shake-up of school funding in England for decades.

Of the city's 87 schools, 85 will get more money under sweeping proposals by the Department for Education (DfE).

The DfE said the proposals would ensure "every pound of the investment we make in education has the greatest impact".

Table showing areas with largest increase in funding

Education secretary Justine Greening says the old system is "unfair" as similar schools can get different levels of funding with "little or no justification".

Travel: Chester Green road still closed
