Residential care at school for disabled pupils could end

BBC Radio Leicester

Since the 1960s Maplewell Hall in Woodhouse Eaves has been run as a school for young people with learning disabilities.

As well as the day term activities, children can stay overnight, to help them learn how to live independently.

Leicestershire County Council has launched a six-week consultation that could mean the residential facility is closed down, saving the council some £293,000 a year.

Councillor Ivan Ould said the authority "cannot afford to fund services for children who aren't eligible for them", but parents and pupils have criticised the decision, and nearly 5,000 people have signed a petition trying to save the school.
