Man jailed after trafficking five people to Derby

Matthew Barlow

BBC Radio Derby reporter

A Derby man has been jailed for three years and nine months after admitting trafficking five people to Derby to exploit them.

Miroslav Bily admitted keeping the five at a house in Osmaston and in a caravan in Chellaston (below) and getting them to work for little or no money.

The 51-year-old, of Sinfin Lane, Derby, brought the victims to the UK from the Czech Republic by ferry.

Police say he targeted vulnerable men who thought they would be coming to the UK for a better life.

The men were put to work doing jobs such as painting and decorating, or were employed in a garage or restaurant.

But Bily gave them nothing, or next to nothing, in cash. Police detectives calculated that for one decorating job, the men received just 35p an hour.

Paying mothers can 'incentivise breastfeeding'

Kate Silver

BBC News health reporter

Offering shopping vouchers to new mothers can encourage them to breastfeed their babies, a study published in JAMA Pediatrics has found.

Fiona Sutcliffe, 29, from Sheffield took part in the scheme with her baby girl
BBC

About 10,000 new mothers in Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire were offered up to £200 in vouchers as an incentive.

Breastfeeding rates increased in these areas, which typically have low uptake.

The vouchers gave mums a "lift" and helped them feel part of a network, according to the researchers.

They could be used to buy food, household items, toys, clothes, books, DVDs or music in supermarkets and other shops.

He said: "I never went out with the deliberate intention to deceive people."

Mr Fernandez told Derby Crown Court how he went about collecting nomination signatures for TUSC candidates.

"The first thing I did was ask if they were on the electoral register.

"I was aware of the rules (on door-to-door canvassing). I had to make sure that they were understanding what I was saying."

Christopher Fernandez, 59, from Chaddesden has denied 14 counts related to the nomination of candidates for the city's local elections.

The trial continues.

Derby election fraud trial: Signatory felt 'misled'

Chris Doidge

BBC Radio Derby, political reporter

Christopher Fernandez, 59, from Chaddesden has denied 14 counts related to the nomination of candidates for the city's local elections.

In a police interview, Mr Fernandez said: "It was my first time as an election agent and I wanted to do a good job.

"For (those signatories) to say they've never heard of TUSC is quite incredible."

He told police one of the signatories had delivered leaflets for TUSC (Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition).

This morning, Derby Crown Court heard the evidence of John Hudson, who has died since giving his account to police.

Mr Hudson said he thought Mr Fernandez was an independent candidate.

The case for the defence is due to begin shortly.
