Donington 'a challenge F1 is missing,' says Hamilton

Calum McKenzie

BBC News

Four-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton has suggested adding Donington Park to the sport's calendar would be a welcome challenge.

An ill-fated attempt to bring the British Grand Prix to the Leicestershire-based circuit failed a decade ago, with the race staying at Silverstone.

In an interview with the BBC, in which he was asked about track specifications, Hamilton expressed his "love" for driving at Donington.

"The Old Hairpin was a nightmare," he added. "You have to come off the brakes and run the speed in, use the downforce.

"Then up the hill and the second right-hander before the back straight [Coppice]. You can't even see the white line.

"Finding the limit there, that corner is way harder than all the corners in F1. That's the sort of corner F1 is missing. If we had that back in F1, it would bring another level to the challenge."

Donington staged the European Grand Prix in 1993, a race won by Ayrton Senna.
