An area of heavy rain with gusty winds will move across Essex this evening. Some of the downpours might be heavy with hail mixed in and there's a risk of thunder and lightning.

Maldon death: Victim's name released by police

A woman who was murdered at her home in Maldon last Thursday has been named as 47-year-old Amina Begum.

A post-mortem examination gave the provisional cause of her death as "multiple incised wounds", Essex Police said.

Javid Ahmed, 25, of Fambridge Close, Maldon, was charged with murder and appeared at Chelmsford Crown Court earlier. He will next appear in court in May.

Bouncy castle death: Family speak of 'overwhelming' messages of support

The family of Summer Grant, who died after the bouncy castle she was playing on blew away, said the messages of support they have received have been "overwhelming".

Summer's uncle Shawn Grant said the messages, donations, flowers and teddy bears left in her memory were "important for the family".

"On social media, the messages we've received, it's just been wonderful, it really has," he said.

Man, 26, questioned over dangerous driving and endangering life on a railway line

It's emerged a man who spent much of the day on Basildon Hospital's roof had been taken to the Accident and Emergency department after a car was found on the c2c rail line near Pitsea.

The 26-year-old came down from the roof safely earlier this afternoon. He had been taken to hospital after failing to stop for police in Stanford Road, Thurrock, at about 04:15.

He's been arrested on suspicion of various offences, including dangerous driving and endangering life on a railway line.

A man who spent several hours on the roof of Basildon Hospital had been taken to the site after failing to stop for police in Thurrock, with his car ending up on a railway track.

An Essex Police spokeswoman said specially-trained officers negotiated with him to get him down from the roof where he had been since 08:30.

The man, who is 26 and from Chadwell, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop, driving without insurance, theft of a motor vehicle, criminal damage, and endangering life on a railway line.

Man down from Basildon Hospital roof

Basildon Hospital says a man who had been on its roof since 08:30 this morning came down at about 15:00.

A hospital spokeswoman said it was a "police matter".

"Hospital staff assisted the police as requested, for example our security staff helped to keep the area safe for patients, visitors and staff," the hospital spokeswoman added.

Maldon-born superhero Captain Britain, who could feature in a new TV series, was created by Chris Claremont and Herb Trimpe in 1976.

He was endowed with great powers by the legendary magician Merlyn. 

Captain Britain helped prevent a neo-Nazi takeover of the country with the help of Captain America and Nick Fury, saving prime minister Jim Callaghan. At one point Captain Britain found himself battling Spiderman.

A man has been on the roof of Basildon Hospital since this morning, police say.

Essex Police officers were contacted at about 08:30 over concerns for the safety of a man on the roof of the building.

Officers are negotiating with him to try and bring him down safely.

Family leave floral tribute to girl who died when bouncy castle blew away

The family of seven-year-old Summer Grant has been back to the site where she died today to leave floral tributes.

The family attended the scene a short time ago to leave the tribute.

A man has been arrested after trains were delayed by a car found abandoned on a railway line.

Emergency services were called to the incident near Pitsea, Essex, after the Volkswagen Polo was found shortly after 4:15 today.

Rush hour services between Pitsea and London Fenchurch Street were disrupted throughout the morning. British Transport Police said a man had been arrested on suspicion of assault and firearms offences.

As well as teddy bears, scores of bunches of flowers have been left at the park where Summer Grant died on Saturday.

She suffered fatal injuries when the bouncy castle she was playing on was blown away in high winds.

Dozens of teddy bears have been left at the scene in tribute to Summer, from Norwich.

A crowdfunding page set up in memory of Summer received 350 donations and has already beaten its £5,000 target.  

Messages on the page attributed to family members, including Summer's grandmother, thanked those who had donated.

"I want to say thank you all who donated and for the heartfelt messages here. It will give our beautiful angel a good send off," she wrote.

An Essex-born Marvel superhero Captain Britain could be turned into a television series.

Captain Britain, who is also known as Brian Braddock who was born in Maldon and lived in the nearby Braddock Manor, was created in the mid-1970s by Marvel UK as a British response to Captain America.

Chris Lark, an independent TV producer, is looking at producing a series featuring Captain Britain - who is included in the Lego Marvel Superheroes game.

One dead and two injured in crash near Clacton

One man has been killed, and two other people seriously injured, in a road crash near Clacton. 

That happened on the A133 at Weeley last night.

A driver, who was in his 70s, died at the scene. A man and a woman, in their 60s, were badly hurt; one is in a life-threatening condition in hospital. 

Library staff numbers fall by half

The number of staff working at libraries in Essex has halved since 2010, BBC research has found.

In 2010 the library service employed 1,141 staff. Now it employs 568 library workers.

In the East of England, the number of council staff working in libraries in the East of England has fallen by 32% since 2010, down from 3,904 to 2,660.

Storm Katie flips over plane

This private aircraft felt the full effects of the high winds on Monday as Storm Katie hit Essex.

The plane found itself on its roof at Clacton Airfield at about lunchtime on Monday.

Power restored to hundreds of homes

Power has been restored to hundreds of homes in Essex that were cut off during Storm Katie on Monday.

UK Power Networks worked to restore supplies to the more than 1,400 homes across Essex hit by the storm.

Most houses had electricity supplies back by Monday afternoon. 

Anger over 'VIP paedophile investigation ordeal'

Former Essex Conservative MP Harvey Proctor said police have "overbalanced" in favour of sex abuse claimants as he launched a new book on his ordeal after he was accused of being part of a VIP paedophile ring.

The 69-year-old, who represented Basildon from 1979 to 1983 and Billericay from 1983 to 1987, saw his home raided and was twice interviewed under caution as part of the historical abuse probe, Operation Midland, but has been told he will face no further action.

He said the book was an account of his life under police investigation.

Review call after Storm Katie hits Essex

An independent Essex councillor is calling for a review of the emergency response to yesterday's storm, which left hundreds of homes across the county without power due to Storm Katie.

Several roads were blocked by fallen trees, including Long Road on Canvey Island.

It was cleared by local residents. Councillor Dave Blackwell believes there should have been a better response from the authorities.

Arrest and road closures after M25 crash

A driver has been arrested after a collision closed part of the M25 in Essex and put three women in hospital.


A red Scania lorry and a blue Nissan were involved in a collision at about 01:55 BST on the clockwise carriageway at Epping.

One woman from the Nissan has been taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, while two others had serious injuries. Essex Police arrested a 61-year-old man from Telford on suspicion of dangerous driving and drink or drug driving.
