Clacton Pier helter-skelter nearing completion after being destroyed in storm

The 75-year-old helter-skelter at Clacton Pier, blown down by strong winds more than two years ago, is in its final stages of being rebuilt.

The attraction was destroyed after 80mph (129km/h) winds hit the Essex coast in October 2013.

It was hoped the slide would be back in action in time for the Easter holidays, but staff say the build is taking time as it is part of a refurbishment of the whole pier.

'Shear' amazement at birth of four new Essex lambs

We couldn't resist sharing the news that the "baby boom" season has begun at one Essex attraction, with the birth of four lambs.

The new arrivals were born at the Lee Valley Parks Farm in Waltham Abbey over the Easter weekend to some of the Hebridean sheep.

The farm tells us no names have yet been chosen - but here's a picture for you to say "aww" to.

Weather: Dry but turning chilly tonight

Any remaining showers should largely die away to leave a mostly dry night, but with a good deal of high level cloud around.

However, there will be some clear spells and it will turn chilly with a patchy frost possible.

Police concerned for missing Chelmsford 22-year-old

Essex Police is concerned for the welfare of a 22-year-old man missing from his home in Chelmsford.

Patrick Aspbury was last seen at 20:00 yesterday and searches are being carried out to find him. 

He is described as 5ft 11in (1.8m) tall, with light brown hair and a goatee beard. He was wearing a grey sheepskin jacket, black round neck jumper and dark blue chinos.

Mother describes 'scary' moment Canvey fairground ride malfunctioned

A mother of two has described to BBC Essex the "scary" moment she saw a fairground ride carrying children malfunction on Canvey Island.

The Echo reported five children and a man were trapped on the crocodile ride at Leisure Fun Park, in Furtherwick Road, on Friday.

Sophie-Anne Radley said: "When it came down from the highest point you can see bolts and debris coming out the cart. The noise was terrible... All you could hear was screaming and crying".

The park's manager, Scott Petty, said the ride has been taken out of action while it is inspected by officials.

Police appeal to Tilbury victim's friends

Police investigating a suspicious death in Tilbury are appealing for friends of the victim to come forward.

Steven Greenway, 49, of Riverside Heights, Dock Road, was found dead inside a flat on 18 January. A post-mortem examination indicated he may have been assaulted before he died.

Det Insp Alan Pitcher said: "Officers are attempting to build a picture of the events leading up to his death... It is believed that Steven had friends in the Dagenham area of London."

National Living Wage to benefit Castle Point workers

Castle Point has been named as the third most likely area in Britain to benefit from the new National Living Wage, with 32% of workers due to get more money in their pockets.

A study by the Resolution Foundation said employees in the Essex town would see a "significant" increase in their wage bill when it is introduced on Friday.

The National Living Wage will be paid to workers aged 25 and above. Initially, it will be set at £7.20 an hour, with a target of it reaching more than £9 an hour by 2020.

A 61-year-old man from Telford, arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and drink or drug driving, has been bailed until 27 June. 

Woman rescued after A130 road crash

We've got some more details on the crash which closed the A130 between the Rettendon Turnpike and Howe Green earlier.

Essex Fire and Rescue says it released a trapped woman after a car and an agricultural vehicle collided.

She has been left in the care of the ambulance service. All lanes have now reopened

Police have released a CCTV image of two people they want to speak to after a dog was stolen from a front garden in Grays.

Minnie, a four-year-old toy poodle, was taken from Rushdon Close at about 20:00 on 29 February. 

Owner Kellie Bird said her son, who has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, has been left "devastated" by the theft.

UKIP Essex county councillor resigns over 'bitter battles' within the party

A UKIP Essex county councillor says he has resigned from the party because of a "split with the Clacton and north Essex branch of UKIP".

Andy Erskine (pictured), who will now sit as an independent, told me he was fed-up with constant "bitter battles" within the party in Tendring.

He added the UKIP headquarters hasn't "got to grasps" with the alleged problems engulfing the party, in the part of Britain where UKIP has had its best electoral success. We've contacted the party for a response.

Police arrest 15-year-old boy over Hassan Abdi Mohamed murder investigation

A teenage boy has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a father-of-two was stabbed to death in broad daylight, police say.

Hassan Abdi Mohamed (pictured), 48, from Harlow, was found collapsed on a path close to Holly Field in the town at 10:45 on 5 March.

A 15-year-old boy from north London was arrested in Holloway yesterday and is currently being questioned. Another man, aged 18, who was arrested on suspicion of murder earlier this month, remains on police bail.

It was a good night for League One strugglers Colchester United yesterday after they beat play-off hopefuls Coventry 1-0.

Forward Gavin Massey scored the only goal of the game, which helped his side move within seven points of safety.
