Pedestrian suffers 'life-changing injuries' in bus crash

A pedestrian hit by a bus in Colchester earlier this morning suffered life-changing injuries, police say.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, was flown to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge following the incident that happened at about 10:00 in Hythe Hill. 

Essex Police is now asking any witnesses to get in touch.

CCTV released in Theydon Bois murder investigation

Police are looking to trace a pedestrian and the occupants of a car who may be able to assist them with a murder investigation.

Maria Bryne, 34, was found at a property in Morgan Crescent, Theydon Bois, on 13 February. Darren Byrne, 39, of the same address, has been charged with her murder

Essex Police says the CCTV images were taken around the time of the incident. 

Council says opening in Leigh 'is not a sinkhole'

Southend Borough Council has taken to Twitter to "allay any fears" over a hole that opened up in Leigh Broadway earlier today.

The authority says it now believes the crater is a "small void above a gas pipe" and not a sinkhole. 

The road remains partially blocked while engineers try to fix the problem. 

Lucky Southend pub-goer escapes ceiling collapse

A pub-goer got more than a packet of peanuts in Southend last night, when the ceiling collapsed on to a table she had moved from just moments earlier.

The drama unfolded in The Alex pub in Southend on Tuesday night, YourSouthend reported.

Kayleigh Johnson, 28, said she heard a "massive crash" before the ceiling came "tumbling down". No-one was injured in the incident, and the pub's owners said specialist contractors were assessing the damage.

Further arrests made in Chelmsford knife fight investigation

Police have made two further arrests in connection with a large fight in Chelmsford on Monday night.

Officers were first called to reports of a disturbance in Readers Court at about 21:30. Seven men were initially arrested - three of whom had stab wounds. 

The force says six of those detained have now been released on bail. The two latest suspects, aged 28 and 29, are currently being questioned. The final suspect remains in hospital.

Danny Cowley: Braintree boss relishing play-off challenge

Large group of youths cause distrubance in Waltham Abbey McDonalds

There was a large disturbance in a McDonalds in Waltham Abbey last night, police say.

Officers attended the restaurant on Highbridge Retail Park at about 18:55 after reports of an altercation involving 20 youths.

Those involved are said to have left the scene and no criminal offences were committed. 

English Democrat Robin Tilbrook pulls out as police commissioner candidate

One of the candidates for the police and crime commissioner (PCC) elections in Essex has withdrawn from the race.

Robin Tilbrook, from the English Democrats, says he will now be supporting the UKIP candidate Bob Spink, and has even seconded his nomination. 

So far five candidates have said they are standing in the PCC election, which will be held on 5 May.

Owners 'scared of letting cat out of house' after shooting

The owners of a cat that survived being shot in the head say they are scared of letting him out of the house.


The feline returned to his home in Rivenhall last month with an air rifle bullet lodged in his head. 

His owner, who does not want to be named, said: "It’s awful to think that someone would do this to a defenceless animal. Doing something like this is absolutely not acceptable."

Cyclist dies after being hit by a car

A cyclist from Essex who was hit by a car in Dorset has died in hospital

Police said Richard Ellis, 58, was injured in a crash on the A352 in Wareham on Sunday.

He was taken by air ambulance to Southampton General Hospital but died yesterday. Mr Ellis was hit by a Nissan driven by a 26-year-old woman. No arrests have been made.

Engineers are currently dealing with a sinkhole that has closed part of the Broadway in Leigh-on-Sea.

Man airlifted to hospital after he is hit by a bus in Colchester

A man has been airlifted to hospital after he was hit by a bus in Colchester this morning.

Essex Police says Hythe Hill is closed following the incident that happened just before 10:00 this morning. 

The male pedestrian, aged in his 30s, has been taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge with life-threatening injuries.

A cat has survived being shot in the head with an air rifle in Rivenhall.

The RSPCA says the black and white moggy was discovered with the pellet still lodged "in his skull" when he returned home on 22 March.

Adam Jones from the charity said: "He was incredibly lucky because a few millimetres in a different direction it would have gone through his ear or eye and could have killed him."

John 'Goldfinger' Palmer murder investigation: Image shows potential witnesses

Police investigating the murder of a notorious criminal in Essex have released an image of two potential witnesses.

John "Goldfinger" Palmer, 65, who allegedly amassed a fortune in a time-share scam, was shot six times in the chest at his South Weald home in June. 

Officers want to speak to two women seen jogging in Weald Country Park, who "may hold vital information about who killed John".

Say hello to Crouchy... He is starting a new life after being found dumped in a river in Burnham-on-Crouch on Monday.

Terry Joyce, from the River Crouch Conservation Group, found the terrapin while surveying the area for a clean-up event later this month.

Terrapins' natural home is the swamps of the US. But a rise in 1990s to keep the reptiles as pets resulted in many being dumped into lakes when they grew too big.

Colchester Borough Council says it is "extremely regrettable" that a pet cat's body was thrown into a bin by park rangers.

The Daily Gazette first reported that Zelda was discarded by staff after she was found dead in Lower Castle Park on Sunday morning. Her owner told BBC Essex she was "disgusted".

A spokesman from the council said: "We offer our sincerest apologies to Zelda's owners for any distress they have been caused."

Extra police patrols following Chelmsford knife fight

Police patrols have been stepped up in Chelmsford after three men were stabbed in a large fight on Monday night.

Readers Court was cordoned off for most of yesterday while officers investigated the scene. 

Six of the seven suspects arrested, all of whom are from the city, have been released on police bail. One man remains in hospital.

Our colleagues at BBC Health have produced a helpful article explaining why junior doctors are going on a 48-hour strike starting today, over their dispute with the government about a new contract.

The government has described the current arrangements as "outdated" and "unfair", pointing out they were introduced in the 1990s. Ministers drew up plans to change the contract in 2012, but talks broke down in 2014.

Sticking points for the junior doctors include changes to salary and weekend working conditions.

Local hospitals have told BBC Essex it's unclear how many workers will be joining the national walk-out, which begun at 08:00. 

Bosses at NHS England said the continued disruption was "deeply regrettable".
