Weather: Showers clearing to leave a slight overnight frost

A band of showers, locally heavy and perhaps wintry over high ground, will clear away towards the south-west this evening. 

Isolated wintry showers will follow overnight along with clear periods, and a slight frost will form. Minimum temperature: 1C (34F).

Boy, 16, charged with Chelmsford knife possession

A 16-year-old boy has been charged with possessing a knife in Chelmsford city centre.

The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested on Sunday evening after being challenged by a police dog and his handler.

He has since been released on bail and is due to appear at Chelmsford Youth Court next month.

Lancaster bomber's tail was the only part intact after World War Two crash

This photo shows what was left of the Lancaster bomber which crashed in Colchester on 25 April 1944 as it was trying to make an emergency landing at RAF Boxted in Langham.

A memorial to the RAF plane is just off Ipswich Road, while a commemoration service took place at the weekend at the new Avellana Place housing estate, where seven streets are named after the seven crew who died.

A Southend MP has fired a broadside against Barack Obama’s "misguided interfering" in British politics.  

Junior doctors' strike: Nearly 3,000 appointments in Essex cancelled

Nearly 3,000 appointments at hospitals in Essex will be cancelled tomorrow and Wednesday as junior doctors walk out over a row at the prospect of a new contract in England.

Industrial action is planned on both days from 08:00 to 17:00. This stoppage will see doctors stop providing emergency care for the first time in this dispute - and ever in the history of the NHS.

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt described the strikes as "extreme", warning they would be "deeply worrying for patients" and could end up risking safety.

Essex runner completes London Marathon on 18th birthday

A big congratulations to Becky Manners, from Manningtree, who took part in yesterday's London Marathon  on her 18th birthday.

The teenager, who ran alongside her parents, was one of about 38,000 runners taking part in the 26.2 mile course. 

She managed to complete the run in a respectable five hours and 49 minutes.

A man whose body was found inside a burned-out caravan is believed to be a 23-year-old who was visiting Bradwell-on-Sea with his family.

The blaze, which happened yesterday morning near Maldon Road, "was not visible" from the road or any other property, Essex Police says.

The body of a dog was also inside the caravan. A post-mortem examination will take place tomorrow.

Seven streets named after seven dead World War Two airmen

Seven streets on the new Avellana Place housing estate in Colchester have been named after seven RAF and Royal Canadian Air Force crew who died on 25 April 1944 when their Lancaster bomber was shot.

They crashed while attempting to land at RAF Boxted in Langham.

Beech King Air confirmed for Clacton Airshow line-up

The Beech King Air is set to make a return to the line-up at Clacton Airshow this year.

Tendring District Council this morning announced the twin engine turboprop monoplane is back after it was last seen at the event in 2012.

Used as a training aircraft, the King Air is capable of carrying up to six passengers or freight. You will be able to see it on day one of the event which takes place on 25 and 26 August.

A postbox in Dunmow is awaiting a special delivery after birds built a nest inside.

The box, which was spotted by Dan Jennings who tweeted: "Caring Essex", has been temporarily put out of action.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said birds take up residency in their postboxes from time to time, adding: "We would place a notice on the box requesting that customers do not use it so the nesting birds are not disturbed."

I've been to Maldon Road in Bradwell-on-Sea where the bodies of a man and a dog were discovered in a burned-out caravan yesterday.

Essex Fire and Rescue says three fire engines were called at about 11:41 - but the blaze was out before they arrived. 

An investigation is currently under way to establish the cause. 

Motorcyclist dies after Southminster crash

A motorcyclist has died after his vehicle left the road in Southminster yesterday, police say. 

The rider, a 36-year-old man from Benfleet, was discovered on the B1021 Cripplegate at 13:30.

He was taken to the Royal London Hospital but later died. The road was closed for more than four hours while investigations were carried out.

Streets on a new housing estate in Colchester have been named after the crew of a fatal World War Two plane crash after a group of men hatched a plot in a shed.

The friends from Langham were behind the plan to commemorate the crew of an RAF Lancaster bomber (similar to the one pictured) which crashed near RAF Boxted in 1944.

Roy 'Lofty' Tolhurst said: "We have a silly Sunday club where we meet up and there was a chance remark about the Lancaster and nobody seemed to have any recollection of it and it seemed appropriate to mark that it happened before it was completely lost."

In a letter to staff, BHS owner Dominic Chappell said: "It is with a deep heart that I have to report, despite a massive effort from the team, we have been unable to secure a funder or a trade sale."

UKIP has been accused of using someone's name and signature on an election form without their knowledge.

Rupert Duke's name appears on nomination papers for a UKIP candidate in council elections in Essex. Mr Duke, who was not a member of the party, said it was "a disgrace" and he had reported the matter to police. 

UKIP's election agent for Castle Point Borough Council said it was an "administration error".
