The fact the club has moved to make this announcement barely a week after Kevin Keen departed points to an internal promotion. 

The previous appointments of Joe Dunne and Tony Humes were also made quickly.

Astronaut Tim Peake calls Basildon cancer patient from space

Astronaut Major Tim Peake has made a special video call from space to a five-year-old cancer patient from Basildon who is being kept in isolation during her treatment.

The Briton spoke to patients at Great Ormond Street Hospital, including Maddison Webb - who is recovering after a bone marrow transplant to treat acute lymphocyte leukaemia

Major Peake and Maddison discussed being separated from their families and restricted diets during the exchange which happened last week.

Police would like to trace this man caught on CCTV following an assault at a McDonalds restaurant in Chelmsford.

The fight, which left a 19-year-old man with a dislocated jaw, happened in the High Street in the early hours on 9 April.   

Weather: Clear spells overnight allowing a frost to form in places

UKIP MEP Tim Aker voluntarily speaks to police over allegations of sexual assault

UKIP MEP and Thurrock councillor Tim Aker has voluntarily spoken to police over allegations of sexual assault.

Essex Police say they have "spoken to the person" reporting "an allegation and inquiries are continuing".  

Last week anonymous letters were sent round to Thurrock councillors and members of the public making claims against Tim Aker. Sources close to Mr Aker described these letters as making "outrageous claims". 

Essex Police have confirmed that they are also investigating "an allegation of malicious communications relating to letters being sent to a number ofindividuals".

Steve Crowther, UKIP Chairman, said in a statement: "I can confirm that the party looked into allegations that were put to us; but it would be inappropriate for us to comment further on something which is subject to a police investigation, until that investigation is complete."

It's after Kevin Keen left his position as U's manager last Tuesday following their relegation from League One.

Peter Shilton: Leicester City's Premier League win was not a fluke

Leicester City's Premier League win was "not a fluke", according to former Foxes and England goalkeeper Peter Shilton.

The 5,000-1 outsiders beat bigger rivals Tottenham, Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea to land their first top-flight title.

Shilton, who now lives in Essex, told the BBC: "A lot of people doubted they could do it - but they've done it, and they've done it in style".

Teenager injured in Clacton crash

A teenager has been taken to hospital following a crash in Clacton this morning.

The East of England Ambulance Service says it was called to reports of a collision between a motorcyclist and car in Jameson Road at about 08:30.

The man, who had neck and shoulder pain, was taken to Colchester Hospital for further treatment. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Man accused of mother's murder found laughing and covered in blood, court told

A man accused of murdering his mother and her friend at a house in Stansted Mountfitchet was found at the scene laughing and covered in blood, a court has been told.

Brett Rogers, 23, of Bentfield Gardens in the village, allegedly knifed Gillian Phillips, 54, and David Oakes, 60, dozens of times in the fatal attack in June last year. 

Chelmsford Crown Court heard Mr Rogers called 999 about 23:00 and told police: "There's been a murder." He denies two counts of murder. 

The trial continues.

A mother from Canvey Island says she has taken her two children out of school today in protests at new Sats tests

Sonia Mutch is one of thousands of parents unhappy at the new exams - but Education Secretary Nicky Morgan says taking pupils out of school "even for a day is harmful to their education".

Ms Mutch, who has a five-year-old and a seven-year-old, told BBC Essex: "There does have to be an element of testing... But they've piled on too much pressure and it's taken away the enjoyment in the classroom".

The man was disturbed by the owner of the car he was trying to break into in Loughton and dropped his bag.

Essex Police senior crime scene investigator Ryan Howell later tweeted a photo of the abandoned snacks and a message directed at the suspect. "They're in my office at Harlow, call 101 to get back," he joked.

A man arrested after a crash on the A12 which injured five people has been released on bail.

A 15-year-old girl was among those hurt on the southbound carriageway near Witham early yesterday morning.

It has emerged one of the pilots killed in a plane crash in North Yorkshire at the weekend was from Essex.

Ajvir Singh Sandhu, 25, from Essex, was one of two men who died when their aircraft came down in Ryedale on Saturday morning. 

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch has launched an inquiry.
