More than 30 horses take Stansted flight for Rio Games

More than 30 horses have flown from Stansted Airport today heading to Rio for the Olympic Games. 

They'll be taking part in equestrian events at the games which kick-off next week.

The BBC's Jonathan Agnew was at the north Essex terminal earlier today.

Two lanes remain closed on northbound M11

Two lanes remain closed on the M11 northbound due to an overturned lorry between J6 for the M25 and J7 for Harlow. 

The HGV is said to have gone through the central barrier. Congestion is back to J5 at Loughton.

Colchester incident summary...

Here's how the Colchester incident developed over the last hour or so:

  • Essex Police was called to Layer Road, Colchester following reports of a man thought to resemble a man depicted in an e-fit following the RAF Marham attempted abduction
  • The barracks seemed to be operating as normal, and people were seen entering and leaving 
  • Norfolk Police said it was "satisfied" that the reported sighting was not linked to its investigation

Essex Police statement on Colchester incident

We've just had this through from Essex Police.

The force said: "Police were contacted shortly before 09:00 with reports of a man seen in Layer Road, Colchester, who was thought to resemble the man depicted in the e-fit issued by Norfolk Constabulary in relation to the attempted abduction of a serviceman at RAF Marham. "Essex Police have been working with Norfolk Police who has confirmed that the sighting was not of the man in the e-fit."

Norfolk Police says it has liaised with Essex Police and is "satisfied" that a reported sighting of two men near Colchester barrack is not linked to their investigation into an attempted abduction at RAF Marham.

It seems like the barracks is operating as normal, and people are able to enter and leave.

Reported sighting of RAF Marham abduction suspects near Colchester barracks

Two men matching the description of those wanted in connection with an attempted abduction of a serviceman at RAF Marham have been spotted near Colchester barracks, the BBC understands.

The victim was threatened with a knife near at the Norfolk base on 20 July.  

Attempts were also made to pull him into a car but he managed to fight the men off, headbutting one of them.

Man pleads not guilty to Westcliff flat fire murder

A man has pleaded not guilty to the murder of a pregnant woman who died in a fire at a tower block in Westcliff-on-Sea.

Khabi Abrey, 30, died two days after a fire at Grampian Flats in Balmoral Road, in May this year.

A post-mortem examination gave the cause of death as complications arising from breathing in fumes. Her unborn baby died of cardiac arrest.

Lillo Troisi, 47, of Balmoral Road, Westcliff-on-Sea, appeared by videolink for today's plea hearing at the Old Bailey. He denies charges of murder, manslaughter, child destruction and two counts of arson.

Kittens suffering flu found dumped in cardboard box

Three kittens aged just six-weeks-old have been found dumped in a cardboard box in Walton-on-the-Naze, the RSPCA says.

The litter were found on a rural track not far from the High Street suffering with cat flu and severe diarrhoea.

RSPCA Inspector Adam Jones said: "We really want to stress that this situation could have been avoided if the owner of the cat who gave birth to these kittens had had their pet neutered."

The launch of Celebrity Big Brother was seen by an average of 2.3 million viewers, overnight figures show.

However, the Channel 5 reality show was beaten on ratings by BBC One's Hugh's War on Waste and ITV's The Investigator, which had 3.58 million and 2.45 million viewers respectively.
