They say the white car, believed to have been a Volkswagen Scirocco, is thought to have been driven deliberately at a cyclist at about 12:40 on 5 November and failed to stop.

The cyclist suffered a serious head injury and is now recovering at home, after receiving treatment at hospital.

Officers believe the driver of the Mini, which was travelling immediately behind the white car, may have witnessed what happened.

Funding cuts for Colchester arts venues

Funding for three arts venues in Colchester is set to be cut by £100,000 over the next two years.

Mercury Theatre

Colchester Borough Council announced it would reduce its grant to the Mercury Theatre by 25%.

Funding cuts were also declared for Firstsite art gallery and the Colchester Arts Centre.

Borough council leader Tim Young said the authority had consulted with the arts organisations, but admitted the cuts may have been a bit "more severe" than predicted.

"We're still going to be the most generous council in Essex when it comes to providing grants to external arts organisations," he added.

The Mercury said it would have to put up prices as a result, while Firstsite said it would make sure the cut would not "affect the brilliant exhibitions, films and cultural activities we provide all year round".

An Essex non-league footballer has been fined for assaulting a fan of a rival team.

Jamie O'Hara, 31, from Chigwell, who plays for Billericay Town, was ordered to pay £525 in fines and £50 in compensation to the victim by magistrates in Guildford.

The incident happened during the team's 3-2 defeat at Leatherhead in April.

Double stabbing on Canvey Island

Essex Police are investigating a second stabbing on Canvey Island yesterday.

The first incident happened just after 16:00 when a man in his 20s was stabbed in the leg as he got out of his car on Poplar Road.

A few hours later at about 22:00 police received reports that a man had been stabbed in the stomach and leg in Benderloch after he was chased down an alleyway by two men.

Both victims were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The stabbings are being investigated as targeted but isolated incidents.

BBC DIY SOS team at Simon Dobbin's Mildenhall house

Plumbers, plasterers and builders have arrived at Simon Dobbin's home in Mildenhall to give it the BBC DIY SOS treatment.

Mr Dobbin, a Cambridge United supporter, was left severely brain-damaged after an unprovoked attack in 2015 when his team played at Southend United. A group of men have been jailed for their part in the attack.

Producer of the BBC1 programme DIY SOS, Hamish Summer, said: "Everyone knew of the family's plight and what they've been going through and I think it really touched them.

"It's been really, really encouraging to see that there's such a great community come together for this."

Campaign against Brightlingsea waste disposal site

Residents of Brightlingsea have held a demo this morning against proposals for a waste crusher in the town.

Protest
BBC

Hardcore rubbish - things such as concrete slabs and rocks - would be to be delivered to a site which would be roughly the size of two football pitches - for disposal.

An Essex County Council spokesman said: "The site has been identified as suitable for inert waste processing in the Waste Local Plan, however in order for a plant to be built there a private company would have to obtain planning permission and an environmental permit from the Environment Agency.

"No application has yet been made."

Local campaigner, Ian Samways says they're worried about the potential for the number of lorries.

"We can give a list of five, six, maybe 10 places that are better suited for this," he said.

"To put it in such a ridiculous area where we've got people's lives at risk is something we are fighting against."

New school gets backing

Councillors have approved plans for a new secondary school and sixth form in Thurrock.

Thurrock Council's planning committee backed the proposals for the building, on the old Smurfit Kappa Lokfast site in Purfleet.

They say it will create more than 1,000 school places.

Councillor Tom Kelly said: "There is a lot of regeneration taking place across the borough.

"What is nice about this particular project is that we're seeing the facilities being built before the houses - which is encouraging."

Think-tank says removal of hospital parking charges could be abused

A think-tank is warning that free hospital parking would see less money raised for front-line health services.

Robert Halfon MP
Conservative Party

It follows a campaign by the Conservative MP for Harlow, Robert Halfon, who is renewing his call for charges to be scrapped.

Mr Halfon has described them as a stealth tax on the sick.

However, the Adam Smith Institute, which aims to promote the economic idea of free markets, says the removal of charges would also lead to drivers abusing the system.

But Mr Halfon says there are ways around that.

He said: "You'd have a token or ticketing system. There are already barriers in hospital car parks so you could get the token either because you're a sick patient or visiting."
