Man attempts to abduct two girls in Black Notley

Police are trying to trace a man who attempted to drag two girls into a red van in Black Notley.

The girls, who are both under 10, were walking on Mary Ruck Way at about 18:15 yesterday when the van pulled up alongside them and the driver tried to abduct them.

He was described as in his 30s to 40s, wearing a black hooded jacket with the hood up, dark glasses and had a tattoo of a skull and crossbones with a red slash on his right hand.

The girls suggested the van had an unofficial Royal Mail logo on its side.

Det Insp Rob Kirby said: "The girls did exactly the right thing by running to a place of safety and letting someone know what had happened to them."

Greater Anglia claims greater customer satisfaction

Rail operator Greater Anglia says it's improved the way it responds to train delays.

Greater Anglia

It says changes have led to a jump in customer satisfaction of 10%, while punctuality on services is about 90%.

The train firm says control room electronic whiteboards used to manage delays are now visible to staff on trains so they know straight away what the problems are and can inform passengers.

It's giving station staff more powers to order replacement buses quickly and has created "hub stations" along the lines that can pass on information more rapidly.

Earlier this month a regular commuter travelling between Halesworth and Ipswich successfully sued the company over delayed trains.

Improvements needed at Southend Hospital

Nic Rigby

BBC News

Southend Hospital has been told it needs to improve the safety of its services and response times, by watchdog the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Between 21 November and 14 December 2017, a team of inspectors visited core services including urgent and emergency care, medical care, surgery, children and young people's services, end of life care and outpatient services.

Inspectors rated the care provided to be "good", but rated it as "requires improvement" when looking at whether services were safe and responsive.

Chief inspector of hospitals, Prof Ted Baker, said: "While we found improvements had been made at the trust, and saw a number of areas of outstanding practice, the trust needs to ensure improvements are embedded and sustained."

The hospital said the report found a number of improvements had been made, and that it acknowledged how caring and hard-working staff were.

Shortly after, she formally opened The Treehouse - a new hospice for EACH in Ipswich, where she also gave her first public speech.

Graham Butland, EACH's chief executive, said: "On behalf of all us... I’d like to congratulate the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the birth of their third child.

"Her Royal Highness has been a fantastic supporter of EACH in her role as Royal Patron, including throughout her pregnancies, giving our media profile a significant boost and inspiring many people to raise funds for us, so we’re incredibly fortunate."

The charity supports children with life-threatening and life-limiting illnesses across Cambridgeshire, north Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk, and has hospices in Milton, near Cambridge, Quidenham in Norfolk and the Treehouse in Ipswich.

Stolen church artefacts 'may have been sold at market'

A coat of arms and an oil painting are among items stolen from churches in Essex which police believe may have been sold at a weekly market.

All Saints Church in Middleton, near Sudbury, and St Andrews in Abberton, near Colchester, were targeted in burglaries in March.

Essex Police said the artefacts, including a crucifix, brass book rests and brass jugs, were of sentimental value to the churches.

Police are investigating whether the items were sold at a Saturday market at North Weald airfield near Epping.
