Brexit worries among some farmers

The New Forest Show gives local farmers the chance to get together and chew over the issues of the day.

Brexit and the result of the EU referendum has proved decisive among the farming community.

Mike Smales, who farms at Landford on the edge of the New Forest, said the industry was "bumping along".

It's a bit too early to tell. We've noticed our cheese sales are up which could be due to the devaluation of the pound. The other issue is labour - we have Polish and Bulgarian workers. This has to be sorted out, we can't manage to harvest our crops without them.

Egg announcement 'positive' for poultry industry

Over in the poultry tent, the talk has been about the announcement by a safety committee that pregnant women should no longer be told not to eat raw or lightly cooked eggs.

Ed Godwin, a poultry farmer based outside Romsey, welcomed the move.

In this day and age, with farming being under scrutiny over traceability and welfare standards, any positive coverage is good for the industry. It's encouraging that any homegrown product is seen as safe and can only be beneficial.

Swimmer Sharron Davies spotted... talking about tick bites

Among the famous faces at the New Forest show is former Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies

She is here along with her basset hound Flash to promote the importance of tick bite prevention for pets out in the countryside.

Once a tick has attached itself, that's how the dog catches diseases so if you can stop that in the first place, that's by far the best option. I've been to the New Forest many times, it's a beautiful part of the world but this is the first time I've been to the show - it's lovely, everyone's really friendly.

'Catastrophic' outlook for dairy farming

The show is a chance for the farming community to get together and discuss some of the developments affecting the industry.

Lymington dairy farmer, and former show chairman, Geoff Morgan has been giving BBC Radio Solent his views on some of the challenges facing young farmers.

New Forest show 2015

The cattle and sheep here are the best in the south of England. It's a yardstick for every young farmer and commoner to aim for. There are definitely not enough young people coming into the industry, but the industry needs to get itself straight - it's dominated by the supermarkets at the moment which is having a catastrophic effect on the dairy industry. It looks like we'll end up importing milk which is something I never thought I'd see.

Precision shaving of a cow at New Forest show

Stephen Stafford

BBC News Online

The livestock tents are a hive of activity with farmers getting their animals looking their best for judging.

Mike Moody has brought seven cattle to the show from his 100-acre family farm near Ringwood - and he is spending time giving some of them a last-minute shave.

We were up in the wee hours - it's just giving it a bit of a clean up so they look smooth and presentable. The show gets us in the public eye - it promotes the local area and food from field to plate.

It's a busy morning - we've got over 1,000 animals all arriving this morning. People always ask me what I do for the rest of the year - it's all preparation. We've got extra drainage in for the car parks and 30 extra parking staff so we've put in a lot of work to ensure people get parked quickly.
