Fifty arrests for new drugs team

A new police team dedicated to disrupting the supply of drugs in Portsmouth has made more than 50 arrests since it was formed in January.

Hampshire Constabulary said the team had also dismantled a cannabis production operation, seized more than £15,000 cash, £30,000-worth of class A drugs, along with knives, batons, a knuckleduster and an imitation gun.

Drugs like crack cocaine and heroin do tremendous harm to the people whose lives are blighted by addiction. The gangs that sell these drugs often exploit vulnerable people as part of their business, including using children to run drugs or by taking over the homes of vulnerable people to deal from.

Letters spell out council tax bills

New Forest District Council is writing to residents to point out that it will only be receiving 10% of the money it collects for council tax.

The authority is keen to point out that the average (band D) household pays £1,133.10 a year to Hampshire County Council, £165.46 to the police and £63.84 to the fire service with town and parish councils claiming an average of £77.96.

NFDC keep 10 pence from each pound we collect and then pass the rest to Hampshire County Council, town and parish councils, and the police and fire services. This makes the amount of council tax we receive from an average band D property £163 a year, or just over £3 a week.
