Balloon sculpture record attempt under way in Winchester

A bid to break the Guinness World Record for the largest modelling balloon sculpture by an individual is under way in Winchester.

Artist Ben Field is attempting to construct a 2.96m (85ft) by 12.2m (40ft) balloon waterfall in The Brooks Shopping Centre, using more than 10,000 balloons.

He said he hoped the piece, which will take about a week to build, will "take people’s breath away.” 

David Baker of Cincinnati, in the US, is the current record holder.

His sculpture of a giant bat hanging upside down, created in 2015, used 3,961 balloons and measured 21.91m (72ft) by 11.22m (37ft).

Portsmouth's promotion to League One to be celebrated at Southsea Common

Portsmouth will celebrate promotion to League One with an event at Southsea Common on Sunday, the club has said.

Hosted by Portsmouth City Council, it will see fans, players and club officials come together to recognise the promotion after four years in League Two, following the team's victory over Notts County at Meadow Lane last month.

The event, which will run from 13:00 BST to 14:10, will include live entertainment and an official city commendation from the mayor, but no open-top bus parade.

New chain ferry in position

The new Cowes floating bridge has been fitted to its chains.

It replaces the previous vessel which was retired in January after 40 years of service, leaving drivers with a 10-mile diversion via Newport.

The Isle of Wight Council said the new ferry, built in Wales by Mainstay Marine, would come into service in mid-May, two months behind schedule.

Breaking'Balcony fall' death 'no longer suspicious'

The death of a woman who was found dead after reportedly falling from a balcony in Southampton is no longer being treated as suspicious, police have said.

The 37-year-old's body was discovered close to Ocean Village, Southampton, at about 16:30 BST on Monday. 

A 61-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder has been released and will face no further action, Hampshire Constabulary said. 

The force added it was preparing a file for the coroner.

A31 death crash driver named

A man who died in a crash on the A31 at the weekend has been named as 22-year-old Connor Heath Johnson, from Ringwood.

Mr Johnson was driving one of two cars involved in the collision in Poulner Hill in the early hours of Sunday.

Woman rescued after falling on rocks

An elderly woman had to be rescued after falling on rocks in Poole Harbour.

Poole lifeboat was called along with paramedics after a passer-by spotted the woman on the water's edge near Dorset Sailing Club at about 09:00.

The woman was moved on to a spinal board and taken to hospital by ambulance.

A body has been recovered from Weymouth Harbour after emergency services were called yesterday to help a man seen in the water.

A search operation was launched on Tuesday afternoon amid concern for the man's welfare.

Dorset Police said the body, found today, was believed to be of a man in his 20s.

A GP surgery in Dorset has stopped patients from booking advanced appointments due to a lack of doctors

Wareham Surgery said its "revised system" comes after one GP went off on long-term sickness with a broken hip and another resigned in March. 

It said a lack of response to a GP vacancy meant it could only offer on-the-day appointments, which can only be booked during certain hours. 

Speaking in the Bournemouth Echo, one patient described it as a "crisis".

Properties searched after three arrested over businessman killing

A house in Winterborne Stickland near Blandford and another in Verney Close in West Howe in Bournemouth are being searched for evidence following the killing of an executive at his luxury Dorset house.

Guy Hedger, 61, was shot at his home in Ashley, near Ringwood in the early hours of Sunday - he later died in hospital.

A 41-year-old Bournemouth man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and aggravated burglary.

A man and woman, both in their 40s, have been detained on suspicion of conspiracy to murder and conspiracy to commit aggravated burglary.

It is believed jewellery, including designer watches, was stolen from the address.

Search for man in water at Weymouth harbour continues

Police officers and divers are continuing to search for a man who was last seen in the water in Weymouth harbour yesterday afternoon.

Police and coastguards carried out an extensive search lasting almost five hours for the man shortly after 14:00 BST on Tuesday.

Man arrested after crash with motorcyclist

The driver of a car involved in a crash with a motorcyclist on the A27 on Sunday has been arrested and questioned. 

The 51-year-old biker suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash on the eastbound carriageway near Portsbridge.

Police said a 32-year-old man from Havant arrested in connection with the crash has since been released under investigation.

Anyone who saw either vehicle before the crash at about 12:10 BST is asked to contact police.

Tribute to motorcyclist killed in tractor crash

The family of a motorcyclist who died after being involved in a crash with a tractor and trailer near Basingstoke has paid tribute to him.

Roy Papen, 62, of Little Hoddington, died after the collision on Ridge Lane, Newnham, last Wednesday.

His family described him as an "amazing man" who "passed away doing what he loved best, riding his bike along country lanes". 

In a statement his his partner Jaci said: "He was my rock. My soul mate. Roy was a very private man and lived a simple life, but brought joy and happiness to those who knew him."

Anyone who saw either vehicle before the crash is asked to contact police.

Burglar 'targeted vulnerable people'

A man who "gained the trust of elderly or vulnerable people" before stealing from their homes has been jailed for three-and-a-half years.

Police said Lee Hillier, 28, sometimes targeted residents at warden-assisted properties, once using a stolen debit card to withdraw £1,470 in cash.

Hillier, of Heath Road, North Baddesley, was arrested following four burglaries late last year in Southampton and Chandlers Ford.

He pleaded guilty at Southampton Crown Court to 10 fraud offences, four burglaries and three counts of theft.

Police in Bournemouth are appealing for witnesses after a hit-and-run crash in which a cyclist suffered a broken ankle. 

The car knocked the 57-year-old man off his bike on Gladdis Road in the West Howe area of the town on Friday night.

Replica of first ship to sail around the world prepares for visitors

The Nao Victoria - a perfect replica of the original ship which became the first to successfully circumnavigate the world - is gearing up for visitors in Weymouth Harbour.

The NAO Victoria completed the greatest adventure in maritime history, between 1519 and 1522.

Victoria was part of a fleet of five ships commanded by Ferdinand Magellan.

The goal was to discover a new westbound route to reach the Spice Islands. The NAO Victoria was the only ship to survive the treacherous voyage. 

The ship will be open to the public from tomorrow until 14 May.

Three people have been arrested over the murder of executive Guy Hedger, who was shot by intruders at his home in Ashley near Ringwood on Sunday.

A 41-year-old Bournemouth man has been held on suspicion of murder and aggravated burglary.

A 44-year-old Bournemouth man and a 40-year-old Bournemouth woman have been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder and conspiracy to commit aggravated burglary.

Weymouth harbour search resumes over man in water

A search and rescue operation for a man in Weymouth harbour is under way again this morning.

The alarm was raised after the man was reported in the water shortly after 14:00 BST yesterday.

Inspector Derek McKerl, of Dorset Police, said: “We are currently carrying out a major search operation in a bid to locate the man and understand what has happened. “We would like to thank the public for their patience and understanding regarding any disruption caused while emergency services carry out their work.”
