Famous Jane Austen portrait comes to Winchester

One of the most famous images of Jane Austen is to go on display in Winchester, where she is buried, to mark the 200th anniversary of the author's death.

The watercolour, by James Andrews, was bought by a private collector, believed to live in the United States, at a London auction in 2013.

The portrait, which also appears on the new £10 note, will go on show at Winchester Discovery Centre from 13 May - 24 July.

British Sailing: Mark Robinson named new Olympic performance manager

British Sailing have named Mark Robinson as their new Olympic performance manager.

Robinson, 42, will start in June after holding a similar post with Australia.

He succeeds Stephen Park, now performance director with British Cyclingand will lead the bid for medals at the 2020 Tokyo Games.

"I feel immensely privileged to be given the opportunity to lead such a successful team into Tokyo 2020 and beyond," Robinson said.

The following roads will be closed or partially closed to vehicles, cyclists and horse riders during the Blandford Georgian Fayre in the town:

The closures will be in place from 05:00 BST to 19:00, during which time the northern part of the normally one-way B3082 White Cliff Mill Street will be open to two-way traffic.

Council expands property portfolio

Portsmouth City Council has agreed to buy a new retail park which it said could generate up to £1m a year.

The construction of Portsmouth Retail Park in North Harbour is expected to be completed next spring, the authority said.

The purchase is part of a council strategy to invest in commercial property across England to raise income.

The authority said its 10 commercial assets currently generated a profit of £4.3m a year.

I won't accept we're safe until it's mathematically done. We'd love to get over the 40 point barrier this weekend though. Any away game in the Premier League is difficult. While there's hope for Sunderland they'll keep going, it will be tough. We've been slightly more inconsistent than we'd have liked, but I see progression in the team and we're going the right way.

Blandford Georgian Fayre - which includes stalls and exhibitions - has been held on the first Bank Holiday Monday in May for more than 24 years.

It attracts more than 30,000 people and raises cash for local charities.

Gosport Marina yacht owner sought

Asda delivery van 'stolen' in Bournemouth

Officers are appealing for information after it was reported an Asda delivery van was stolen in Bournemouth.

Wellington Road, Bournemouth

The driver of the van reported it was taken while he was making deliveries in Wellington Road (pictured) at about 18:30 on Wednesday, Dorset Police said.

The driver was informed by a member of the public that the van had been seen heading in the direction of Holdenhurst Road.

It was later recovered in the Totton area of Hampshire.

A 50-year-old man, of no fixed address, was arrested on suspicion of theft and driving offences and has since been released under investigation.

Appeal to trace next of kin

An appeal has been made to help trace the next of kin of a man from Ipswich.

Paul Backhouse, who resided at an address in Emmanuel Close, died on 17 April, at the age of 68. 

There were no suspicious circumstances.

Officers would like to trace anyone who may have known Mr Backhouse.

It is believed he had links locally, in Portsmouth and overseas in America.

Pedestrian dies after being hit by car in Bournemouth

A pedestrian who was hit by a car in Bournemouth on Wednesday has died of her injuries.

The 87-year-old woman was stuck in Southbourne Road (pictured) at about 11:45 BST.

She suffered serious injuries to her legs and head and was taken to hospital, where she has since died of her injuries.

Officers are appealing for witnesses.

Eddie Howe said he is "really pleased" Artur Boruc has extended his contract through to summer 2018.

"He's been so consistent for us and in really good form," he said, adding: "He's won us points this season."

But don't expect Howe to be distracted by the big fight on Saturday night at Wembley between Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko.

"I'm not a boxing fan, it's one sport I don't follow. I do appreciate and respect the training, but the focus is on us," he added.

Milestone reached for Great Western Railway's new train fleet

The new fleet of Intercity Express Trains for the Great Western Railway (GWR) line from London to the South West has reached a new milestone, the firm has said.

The route will link Paddington to Exeter and Cornwall via Reading and Newbury.

The first five-car test train left Japan for the UK on Wednesday and is expected to reach Southampton port in June, GWR said.  

The Class 802 fleet is currently being built in Pistoia, Italy, and due to enter passenger service next summer.

In total, three test trains will be used ahead of the trains entering service.

The Class 800 fleet, built at Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, is currently being tested in the UK and due to enter service later this year.

Bournemouth stabbing: Man 'critical but stable'

The condition of a man who was stabbed in a Bournemouth alleyway on Thursday is described as critical but stable, Dorset Police has said.

The force added no arrests had been made.

The man, in his 40s and from Bournemouth, was discovered with stab wounds on a path linking Manor Road and East Overcliffe Drive at 11:40 BST on Thursday.

'Thousands of warning letters sent' as result of speedwatch scheme

A crackdown on speeding drivers in Dorset has been relaunched by police. 

The force is handing out special equipment to volunteers to record those exceeding speed limits through the county's towns and villages as part of the Community Speedwatch scheme.
