Video: Drink-driver jailed after police roadblock ramming

Watch the moment drunken driver Martin Ralfs rammed a police roadblock at high speed after becoming depressed over a failed relationship.

Three police officers were injured and two police cars written off in the crash on the M27 in Hampshire in April.

The 58-year-old, from Southampton, had previously admitted dangerous driving, drinking and driving, failing to stop and breaches of a restraining order. He was jailed for two years at Southampton Crown Court.

Driver jailed for causing 'preventable' fatal crash

A crash which killed a three-year-old girl and caused her mother to lose her unborn baby was "entirely preventable", police have said.

Thomas Hunter, 59, was jailed for six years for causing death by dangerous driving and serious injury by dangerous driving.

Isla Wiggin, of Fleet, Hampshire, died two days after the crash on the A34 near Oxford in August.

If Hunter had taken care over his driving, and had been paying full attention to the road, Isla would be here today along with baby Harry. This case shows what the catastrophic consequences can be when drivers are not concentrating when at the wheel."

Cowes floating bridge: 'Outstanding snags' to be addressed

Any "outstanding snags" with the Isle of Wight's troubled floating bridge will be addressed this week, the council has said.

It comes as the Cowes chain ferry enters the final phase of commissioning, after which is will officially become the property of Isle of Wight Council.

In order for the chain wheels and troughs to be inspected and tested it will be taken out of service from 08:00 BST on Tuesday until 08:00 on Thursday, it said.

However, The Jenny boat will run as an alternative for foot passengers until 23:00.

Since launching in May the chain ferry has broken down, run aground, cars have scrapped bumpers getting on and off and the were problems with it not running at low tide.

A34 Crash driver "completely ruined" family's lives

The mother of a toddler killed in a crash on the A34, who also lost her unborn child, has said the driver responsible had "completely ruined" her family's lives.

Collette Wiggin read out a victim impact statement in Oxford Crown Court ahead of the sentencing of Thomas Hunter, 59, who had admitted causing death by dangerous driving and serious injury by dangerous driving.

Her daughter, Isla died two days after the crash on the A34 at Hinksey Hill, Oxford, on 25 August.

Hunter was jailed for six years.

Corn destroyed in Slough field fire

Ten acres (four hectares) of corn has been destroyed by fire in Slough.

About 20 firefighters tackled the blaze in a 40-acre (16-hectare) corn field in The Myrke, Datchet, using beaters and four hose reel jets.

It started at about 13:00 BST and has since been extinguished.

A lorry driver has been jailed for causing the death of a three-year-old girl in a pile-up in which her pregnant mother suffered a miscarriage.

Thomas Hunter, 59, of Mansfield Road, Mansfield, admitted causing the eight-vehicle crash on the A34 at Hinksey Hill, Oxford, on 25 August.

Isla Wiggin, of Fleet, Hampshire, died two days later. Her mother Collette's unborn son also died in the crash.

He was jailed for six years following a hearing at Oxford Crown Court.

Boys assaulted outside Reading's John Madejski Academy school

Two eight-year-old boys have been attacked by a man outside the John Madejski Academy school in Reading.

The man, who was on a mountain bike, shouted at the boys to move, before stopping and assaulting them and then riding away on 10 July.

PC Scott Whiteside, of Thames Valley Police, said: “This was a nasty attack and it was fortunate the victims were not seriously injured however they were both understandably distressed by the incident."

The force is appealing for witnesses.

Hive Energy solar farm proposal approved in Romsey

Plans for a 72-hectare (178-acre) solar farm close to the site of an energy firm have been approved.

The 40MW park will be built on land at Woodington Farm, near Romsey, which surrounds Hive Energy's headquarters.

Test Valley Borough Council granted permission for the park for 25 years but the proposals are subject to a number of conditions, including a plan for the restoration of the site.

The project will be built next summer, Hive Energy said.

Jailing him for two years, Judge Peter Ralls QC told Southampton Crown Court it was a "miracle" that Ralf's "appalling driving" had not resulted in death or serious injury.

Body believed to be Ringstead Bay spear fisherman found

A body found off the Dorset coast is believed to be that of a man who failed to return home after going spear fishing, police said.

Andrew Scott, 27, was last seen leaving his home in Winterborne Whitechurch to go fishing at Ringstead Bay on Monday.

A coastguard-led search was stood down on Tuesday evening.

A Dorset Police spokesman said a body believed to be Mr Scott was found off the coast of the White Nothe in Weymouth.
