EU war of words becomes a numbers game

Patrick Burns

Political editor, Midlands

I've taken a look a some of the statistics being used as part of the numbers game in the EU referendum debate.

What can the number-crunchers tell us, for example, about Herefordshire, famous for its apple orchards, polytunnels and, increasingly, for the migrant workers from eastern EU countries who go there to pick the crops?

Kamil Jussak, who's 23 and from Long Acre, pleaded guilty to causing the death of Matthew Cullum on 29 August last year.

He didn't enter a plea on charges of failing to stop after an accident, failing to report it and failing to provide his name and address.

The case, at Worcester Crown Court, has been adjourned until 24 June for reports.

Redditch United have signed the former Birmingham City, Crystal Palace and Republic of Ireland striker Clinton Morrison (pictured right).

Darren Byfield and Clinton Morrison

The 37-year-old, who was playing for League Two Exeter City last season, says he turned down a number of offers from other clubs to play in the Southern Premier Division because of his friendship with United boss, Darren Byfield (above left).

Working with Darren will be brilliant. I'm not here to be mid-table, I want to win things and I want Redditch fans to know this is not a jolly - I'm here to get them out of the league."

The project has an £11.5m budget and now the contractor is asking for a further £700,000.

The district council say the extra charges, which relate to work needed on the car park, are realistic and they still hope the facility will open in 2017.

Minor injuries unit cuts opening hours due to staff shortages

The opening times at Evesham’s Minor Injury Unit are being cut from today due to the trust being "unable to recruit suitably qualified nurses to cover the current opening times".

The unit will now be open from 09:00 to 21:00, seven days a week, rather than from 08:00 to 23:00.

Dairy farmer considers quitting after milk price cut

BBC Hereford and Worcester

A Herefordshire dairy farmer says he could soon be forced out of the business, as the dairy producer Arla cuts the price it pays to farmers.

Dairy farm

The milk supplier is cutting the base price for a litre of milk by a penny to 19p from today, citing over supply globally.

The cut will hit Simon Brewer, who has almost 100 cows in Ross-on-Wye - he says it's very difficult to diversify.

If you look at the other commodity prices, the things we'd probably go into like beef and sheep, it isn't that attractive to change [and] it also costs a lot to change. If there is another price reduction it's very unlikely we'll be producing milk in 12 months' time."
