Weather across Hull and East Yorkshire: Wintry showers

Wintry showers will start to fade tonight although the odd one may persist around the coastal areas such as Bridlington. 

With winds moderating and some clear spells developing it will become frosty in many parts by morning with some patchy ice.

Abusive carers' neglect of 84-year-old 'deeply distressing'

Three carers who pleaded guilty to a joint charge of ill treating or wilfully neglecting Freda Jobson (pictured) at Keldgate Manor Residential Home in Beverley, East Yorkshire have been given community orders.

Tracy Priestley, 41, has been sentenced at Hull Crown Court to a 12 month community order with unpaid work of 240 hours and a curfew 21:00 to 07:00.

Sophie Hinchsliff, 24, and Danielle Snowden, 25, were both sentenced to 12 month community orders with unpaid work of 200 hours and to pay £1,500 in compensation.

Fears for missing Hull man Steven Bannister

Police are appealing for help to trace Steven Bannister, 64, of Ellesmere Avenue in Hull.

He left his home address at around 13:30 BST on Friday and he's not been seen by his family since. 

The police are concerned about Steven’s welfare as it's out of character and he has recently been in "low spirits".

Some staff at Hull College will strike next Tuesday

Some staff at Hull College are planning to strike next week over pay and a controversial lesson observation system. 

The walkout will take place on Tuesday, 3 May after a vote in favour of industrial action by members of the University College Union.

A spokesman for the college says less than 12% of the group's overall workforce voted for strike action and its management team is continuing to meet the union to resolve the issues.

Sport: Red card protest by Hull City fans

Fans of Hull City plan to hold up red cards before tonight's home game against Brentford. 

It's to protest against the imposition of a new membership scheme many believe is unfair.

Three carers have admitted neglecting an 84-year-old Alzheimer's patient at Keldgate Manor Residential Home in East Yorkshire.

Sport: East Yorkshire tennis player through to second round of Estoril Open

British number three Kyle Edmund beat Spain's Daniel Gimeno-Traver in straight sets to reach round two at the clay-court Estoril Open.

Edmund came back from a break down in the second set to win 6-3 7-5 and set up a second-round match against French third seed Benoit Paire.

The 21-year-old from Tickton in East Yorkshire won the first five games, before recovering from 0-3 to take the second set.

Sport: Hull KR director of rugby nearly joined Toronto

Hull KR head of rugby Jamie Peacock (pictured) has revealed he nearly joined incoming League One side Toronto.

The Canadian club's entry into British rugby league for 2017 is expected to be announced on Wednesday.

Peacock, 38, retired from playing at the end of last season after winning the treble with Leeds Rhinos.

BreakingWoman injured after crash in Burstwick

A woman has been injured after a car and a lorry collided on Daisy Hill Road in Burstwick.

The road is closed and the woman has been taken to Hull Royal Infirmary.

The incident happened just before 13:15 today. 

It's unknown how badly the woman is injured but Humber Roads Police have tweeted saying it's a "serious road traffic collision". 

The road is currently closed and causing some delays.

Motorcyclist 'seriously injured' in Beverley crash

Police are appealing for witnesses after a motorcyclist suffered serious injuries after his black Yamaha motorbike collided with a Ford Fiesta car yesterday morning in Beverley.

The collision happened at 07:00 near to the Wickes DIY store on Swinemoore Lane.

Sport: Hull City v Brentford tonight

Hull City will be looking to cement fourth place in the Championship table, starting with a win over Brentford tonight at the KCOM Stadium. 

The Tigers can't finish any higher and fourth would give them home advantage in the second leg of the play-offs.

Where is the gateway to East Yorkshire?

Snaith and Cowick Council want to lay claim to the title of Gateway to East Yorkshire. 

They're hoping it will be made official in time for City of Culture.  

But there is a challenger to the title. 

Some people in Goole have told the BBC that they think they should be known as the Gateway to East Yorkshire.

BreakingMan airlifted to hospital after M62 crash

A man has been airlifted to hospital after his car crashed on the M62 Eastbound between J37 and J38.

His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening but he has been taken to Hull Royal Infirmary.

The vehicle, a grey Peugeot 208, was said by a witness to have left the carriageway and gone down an embankment.

There are still severe delays along that stretch of the motorway.

Family thank Yorkshire Air Ambulance for help over years

A family has thanked the Yorkshire Air Ambulance after it lifted some of them to safety on two separate occasions across five years.

The most recent was earlier this year when Ken Hoggarth had a heart attack at the wheel of his car near Driffield. 

The air ambulance came to the rescue and took him to hospital.

That follows an accident in 2010 when Ken's son and his two young children were travelling from Walkington. 

They were also helped by the ambulance and fully recovered.

Missing mother and child could be in Hull

A 34-year-old woman and her six-year-old daughter missing from the Crieff area of Scotland could be in Hull.

Police are concerned for the welfare of Emma Malloy and her daughter Leah who have not been seen since Friday.

Police say Ms Malloy has connections to the Leeds and Hull areas as well as Edinburgh and the Lothians.

Their disappearance is said to be out of character and anyone with information should contact police.  

Over 200 penalty notices for fly-tippers in Hull

Hull City Council has handed out more than 200 penalty notices to people caught fly-tipping in Hull.

The council has agreed to spend an extra £60,000 a year to tackle fly-tipping and clearing litter from the city's open spaces.

East Yorkshire former quarry could be turned into a retirement village

A planning application has been made for a development on a former quarry site in East Yorkshire of 93 homes for people aged over 55.

The retirement village also includes a community centre (pictured below), gym and swimming pool which will be available for people living in North Cave to use.

The site is just off the B1230 Newport to North Cave road, between Common Lane West and South Ings Lane.  

Plan to entice younger workers at the East Riding Council

In some parts of the East Riding Council 80% of the workforce is aged 55 or above and more than half the council's workforce is aged 45 or over. 

So the council is looking at ways to recruit younger workers.

A report going to its cabinet today suggests some ways at addressing the problem by, for example, offering them a better work-life balance than they could expect in the private sector.  

Over 1,000 appointments postponed as doctors strike

Junior doctors in Hull and across the country are on strike today and tomorrow in protest at the imposition of a new contract from the summer.

In Hull and East Yorkshire 1,133 appointments and 66 operations have been postponed.

It is the first time services such as A&E, maternity and intensive care have been hit in the long-running dispute.

People will be cared for by consultants or managers brought in to cover the shortfall.
