John Surtees: Sports Personality Of The Year 1959

Before we go here's the moment John Surtees won BBC Sports Personality Of The Year in 1959 after winning his second motorcycling world title.

He then switched disciplines to take the Formula 1 title with Ferrari in 1964 and is the only man to secure the World Championship on four wheels as well as two.

Car park murder victim is named

Police have named a man whose body was found in a car park in Tunbridge Wells earlier this week as 43-year-old Giles Metcalfe. 

34-year-old Dean Lewis was charged with murder earlier today.

John Surtees, who has died aged 83, is the only man to have won a grand prix world championship on two and four wheels.

A brilliant motorcyclist who dominated the top 500cc class for much of the late 1950s, Surtees moved on to cars and immediately  established himself as a leading figure,  winning the Formula 1 championship for Ferrari in 1964.

Through the mid-1960s he was one of the towering figures in F1 along with Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Jackie Stewart and Dan Gurney.

Former Formula 1 and motorcycling world champion John Surtees has died at the age of 83, his family has announced.

Surtees is the only man to have won the grand prix world championship on both two wheels and four.

He won four 500cc motorcycling titles - in 1956, 1958, 1959 and 1960 - and the F1 crown with Ferrari in 1964.

Surtees died at St George's Hospital, London, on Friday afternoon after being treated for an existing respiratory condition, a  family statement said.

"We deeply mourn the loss of such an incredible, kind and loving man as well as celebrate his amazing life," the statement added.

"John was a loving husband, father, brother and friend. He was also one of the true greats of motorsport.

"He has set a very real example of someone who kept pushing himself at his peak and one who continued fighting until the very end."

He was awarded an MBE in 1959, the same year he won the  Sports Personality of the Year award,  and the CBE in 2016.

John Surtees owned Buckmore Park, near Rochester,  where Formula One stars Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button practised as youngsters. 

He also ran the Henry Surtees Foundation, set up in memory of his 18-year-old son who died in a crash at Brands Hatch.  

Henry began driving as a child at Buckmore Park.

A series of fundraising events were held at the kart circuit in Kent in his name.

Kent-based former Formula 1 and motorcycling world champion John Surtees has died.

The 83-year-old was admitted to St Georges Hospital, London, in February with an existing respiratory condition and after a short period in intensive care he passed away peacefully earlier this afternoon.

John was a loving husband, father, brother and friend. He was also one of the true greats of motorsport and continued to work tirelessly up until recently with The Henry Surtees Foundation and Buckmore Park Kart Circuit.

We deeply mourn the loss of such an incredible, kind and loving man as well as celebrate his amazing life. He has set a very real example of someone who kept pushing himself at his peak and one who continued fighting until the very end.

Surtees was Formula 1 world champion in 1964 with and was the only man to have won both the F1 and motorcycling grand prix world championships.

The family also thanked staff at the hospital and also The East Surrey Hospital for their "professionalism and support during this difficult time for us", and to the public for "their kind messages in recent weeks".

Funeral details will be announced in due course.
