BreakingChatham dog attack: Animal was a banned breed

Scene of Chatham dog attack
BBC

Kent Police say a dog which seriously injured a young girl in Chatham on Tuesday was a pit bull-type, a banned breed under dangerous dog legislation.

The dog was shot dead at the scene by armed Kent Police officers to ensure the safety of the public.

The child remains in a London hospital with very serious injuries following the incident, which took place in the Jenkins Dale area.

A man, a woman and a teenager, all from Chatham, were arrested on suspicion of offences under the Dangerous Dogs Act.

The man and woman have since been bailed, pending further enquiries, until Wednesday 26 April 2017. The teenager has been released while investigations continue.

Anyone with information should call Kent Police on 01634 792209, quoting reference 04-1003.

Cigarette smuggler tracked down in pub

Bob Dale

BBC Live reporter

A lorry driver who was jailed in his absence for trying to smuggle nearly six million cigarettes through Dover is behind bars.

Richard Curtis, who's 57 and from Bawtry in South Yorkshire, was sentenced to three years and nine months at Maidstone Crown Court on Wednesday, but failed to appear.

He was found in a pub in Jacksdale near Nottingham, when a member of the public spotted him following a media appeal.

The illicit cigarettes, which were found hidden in a load of frozen food, would have cost the exchequer £1.3m in lost duty.

Breaking Hot air balloon record bid organisers 'haven't contacted Guinness World Records'

Hot air balloons
PA

A Guinness World Records spokesman has just released this statement in relation to this morning's hot air balloons cross-channel record bid.

Guinness World Records, the global authority on record breaking, is aware of the record attempt for most hot air balloons to cross the English Channel from media reports but unfortunately the organisers have not made a formal application or been in direct contact with us. The current record to beat was achieved in the UK in April 2011 and was a total of 49 balloons.

Without the formal application the organisers have not received the official guidelines which are the rules for the attempt. We have contacted the organisers and sponsors today to advise them of the process as we would be keen to help support their endeavour, and if our adjudicators are satisfied with the required evidence, would love to ratify this achievement.

The organisers are free to apply online for this existing record title, and once this is received details will be provided to them on how to submit the required evidence retrospectively for our records management team to review and verify.

UKIP's Mark Reckless to join Conservatives in Welsh Assembly

UKIP's Mark Reckless has confirmed he is joining the Conservative group in the Welsh Assembly.

The South Wales East AM and former Rochester and Strood MP will sit as a Tory but will not join the party.

Conservative group leader Andrew RT Davies welcomed a "hard-working and dedicated" AM, saying it made his party the official opposition to Labour.

But Gower MP and ex-AM Byron Davies said allowing Mr Reckless into the group was "not a particularly bright idea".

Flytipping CCTV released in Canterbury

An investigation into flytipping on the site of a disused pub has led to footage being released.

Canterbury City Council said tonnes of rubbish have been dumped at the privately-owned Share and Coulter site in Greenhill.

The council said it had spent more than £21,000 clearing the site over the past year because of the impact it was having on nearby residents.

In February, contractors removed 74.1 tonnes of general waste, 11 lorry loads of rubble and four tonnes of asbestos, it said.

Douglas Rattray, the council's head of safer communities, said: "We would really like to speak to the people in these images as they could have valuable information that will help us and the police."

Town 'too posh' for cheap Monopoly houses

Lizzie Massey

BBC Live reporter

Board game creators have dubbed Royal Tunbridge Wells "too posh" to have an equivalent of Old Kent Road in the town’s brand new Monopoly board.

It beat other "Royal" cities and towns across the UK to have an official game made in celebration of another Royal milestone year for The Queen.

More than 2,000 suggestions for places on the board were sent in, but very few for the modest end of town, and none to take the place of Old Kent Road.

Poll lines have re-opened for one week to get some ideas.
