Camber Sands deaths: Request for lifeguards turned down

Camber Sands beach
PA / @TASHKA4

The RNLI turned down a request to provide lifeguards at Camber Sands 16 days before five friends drowned on the beach, an inquest has been told.

The request from Rother District Council was rejected by the lifeboat charity because of a lack of resources.

Darren Lewis, the RNLI's senior lifeguard manager, told the hearing in Hastings: "We just physically did not have the manpower."

He said following the deaths the RNLI offered to put lifeguards on the beach.

The charity offered to provide lifeguard cover for the next bank holiday and then for the rest of the season, after being able to reallocate resources, Mr Lewis said.

Camber Sands deaths: Strong undercurrent 'deceived beach-goers'

Camber Sands beach.
PA / @TASHKA4

A beach-goer has told an inquest he felt "unnerved" by the sea conditions on the day five young friends drowned at Camber Sands.

Stephen Deacon said the water looked calm on the surface but there was a strong undercurrent.

"I wouldn't have gone to the beach if I knew it was like that," he added.

Camber inquest: Witness describes "unnerving" currents

@TASHKA4

A man who was on Camber Sands the day five young men were drowned has told an inquest how the sea conditions left him "unnerved".

Stephen Deacon says the strong currents under the calm surface water made him return to the beach, along with the three children in a dinghy that he was supervising.

Mr Deacon says he later saw the five men chest-deep in the water, apparently playing volleyball.

The five victims were Kenugen Saththiyanathan, 18, known as Ken, and his brother Kobikanthan Saththiyanathan, 22, known as Kobi, both of Erith, and their friends Nitharsan Ravi, 22, of Plumstead, Inthushan Sriskantharasa, 23, of Grays in Essex, and Gurushanth Srithavarajah, 27, from Welling.

Big fall in migrants detained at Dover

Alex Bish

Investigative journalist, BBC South East

More than 300 suspected illegal immigrants a month were being detained at a holding facility at Dover's Eastern Docks last year.

A report by the facility's Independent Monitoring Board says more than 1,800 detainees were held between July and December, after being found either at the port of Dover, the Channel Tunnel, or arriving on small boats.

Migrants in France
AFP

That’s a sharp fall on the number detained in 2015, when over 8,000 were held in the space of six months.

It suggests increased investment in port security in France is reducing the number of illegal immigrants reaching this side of the Channel.
