Flats struck by lightning in Ashford

Stuart Maisner

BBC Live reporter

The roof of four flats in Ashford has been struck by lightning this evening.

Four fire engines are currently at the address of a three-storey property in Waltham Plan in Stanhope.

All residents have been accounted for and there are no reported injuries, although it is thought the occupants of four flats will need rehousing, says Kent Fire and Rescue.

Heavy rain has caused flooding on the M20 around the Ashford area leaving long delays.

Councillors heckled as children's centres closures voted on

Rajdeep Sandhu

Political Reporter, BBC Radio Kent

The sounds of children crying isn't what you usually get at a council meeting. But this afternoon Cabinet at Medway Council was packed with concerned parents and their little ones.

They'd been protesting outside against plans to close six out of 19 Sure Start centres.

After Cabinet voted through proposals they we're greeted with shouts of "shame".

Despite the council changing their original plans to close all 19 and replace them with four larger hubs the parents I spoke to weren't convinced the service would stay the same.

Even though the decision has been made campaigners say they'll keep fighting.

M25 killer Noye 'should never be let out'

Sue Nicholson

BBC News

Kenneth Noye
PA

The impending transfer to an open prison of road rage killer Kenneth Noye has been described as "extremely disappointing" by the former detective superintendent who led the murder investigation.

Nick Biddiss said an open prison was a prelude to being released back into the community and he did not think Noye should ever be let out.

"He's a man who's lived his life by crime. He lived a very extensive life in the criminal world in south London and north Kent, and I think he'll be a danger when he's out.

"The criminal justice system, in my view, is letting the public down," Mr Biddiss said.

Noye was sentenced to life with a minimum term of 16 years in 2000 for stabbing to death 21-year-old Stephen Cameron on a slip road of the M25 at Swanley in May 1996.

Woman found guilty of trying to smuggle migrants into the UK

Simon Jones

Reporter, BBC South East Today

A mother of four from Kent has been found guilty of trying to smuggle 12 Vietnamese migrants into the UK through the Channel Tunnel.

Katy Bethel, who's 28 and from Gillingham, was heavily pregnant at the time.

The migrants - four men, five women and three children - were found in the back of a van-load of tyres in July 2015.

A Border Force officer in Coquelles spotted a pair of jeans sticking out of one of the tyres.

Katy Bethel was a passenger in the vehicle driven by her then-partner Aaron Harris. Harris pleaded guilty to assisting unlawful immigration.

Katy Bethel had claimed she had no idea the migrants were in the van. She said she and her partner had gone on a day trip, looking for a beach, but had got lost and left the van by the roadside as they went for a walk.

The prosecution had accused her of talking 'nonsense'.

In the four hours the pair were in France, they sent and received 67 messages and calls to and from an unknown number, the court was told.

Bethel said Harris was using her phone on the trip to make calls and texts and she was unaware of their contents.

Southern rail talks with RMT union 'stall' with no agreement

Ben Weisz

Political reporter, BBC Sussex

Southern rail trains
PA

Govia Thameslink’s HR Director Andy Bindon has written to staff – confirming no agreement with the RMT and no further talks planned with that union.

They also say there is a “schedule of meetings in place over the next couple of weeks” with the Aslef union.

It comes after talks with the RMT aimed at resolving a long-running dispute over driver-only operated trains on Southern rail "stalled" with no agreement yesterday.

Unfortunately, the RMT union did not present any new proposals in yesterday's talks. Modernisation is urgently required to future-proof our railway. Alongside investment in better infrastructure and new trains, this includes transforming working practices. We hope the RMT will get on board with these essential improvements to give our passengers the service they deserve."

Man dies after falling ill during Channel swim

Lizzie Massey

BBC Live reporter

A man aged in his 40s has died after falling ill during an attempt to swim the English Channel.

The Coastguard received a call from a support vessel at 21:20 BST last night reporting that a swimmer was in difficulty and needed assistance.

The vessel was in French waters.

Kent Police was then called at 21.44 BST.

The UK Coastguard search and rescue helicopter based at Lydd, which was training nearby, arrived on scene within 10 minutes and airlifted the swimmer to William Harvey Hospital in Ashford, where he later died.

Officers are currently at the scene although the force says the death is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

Dead baby Eli Cox failed by system, convicted man's cousin says

Lauren Moss

BBC Live reporter

The cousin of a man who caused the death of a five-month-old baby has said the child protection system failed to do enough to keep the baby safe.

Eli Cox from Kent suffered 28 fractures before he died of a "catastrophic" brain injury in April 2016.

His mother Katherine Cox, 33, and her boyfriend Danny Shepherd, 25, have been found guilty of causing his death.

Emjay Ivory, told BBC South East Today the family had regular visits from social workers before Eli died.

"One would come once a week, one once a fortnight, the health visitor once a month... [Cox] had a lot of support..."

"If enough was done, Eli would be here now," Ms Ivory said.

Kent County Council confirmed the family was known to them.

In a statement, it added: "We note the conclusion of the criminal trial in respect of this tragic matter.

"A serious case review is currently being completed under the direction of the Kent Safeguarding Children Board (KSCB) the findings of which will be made public in due course."

Sentencing will take place at a later date as a psychiatric report is being prepared.
