Animal welfare group's CCTV victory

A Kent-based animal welfare group is claiming victory after the government announced plans for compulsory CCTV cameras in slaughterhouses.

Animal Aid says the move will help stop the illegal cruelty they've exposed through undercover filming.

The parents of two severely disabled children forced to sleep in the living room of their council house in Ramsgate because they can't get up the stairs, say they feel "abandoned and let down" by the authorities.

They've turned down one house they were offered because they say it's not suitable.

The RNLI is urging people to "respect the water" this summer as part of a drowning prevention campaign.

Stephen McGowan, 57, is last known to have been in the area of the New Beach Holiday Centre at around 19:30 BST on Monday 14 August.

He is described as white with grey balding hair and was last seen wearing a cheque shirt, dark trousers and may either be wearing or carrying a high visibility jacket.

Officers are growing increasingly concerned for his welfare.

One woman died and 19 others were injured when a car rammed into people protesting against a far-right march.

Commuters braced for rise in rail fares

Commuters will find out later how much train tickets will rise next year, with warnings there could be the highest increase in five years.

The Government links the annual January rise in fares with the July Retail Price Index, which will be revealed at 09:30 BST.

The RMT union says fares could go up by as much as 3.9% which would increase the price of a season ticket between Brighton and London Bridge by £134 to just under £4,000 a year.

Tributes paid to man who died attempting to swim English Channel

The girlfriend of a man who died while trying to cross the English Channel as part of an endurance event has described him as "kind, generous and loyal" and says she hopes he is remembered for all of his sporting achievements.

Lola Lewis says Douglas Waymark had prepared "meticulously" for the Enduroman event which sees athletes attempt to run, swim and cycle the 300 miles from London to Paris.

Mr Waymark got into difficulty about halfway across the Channel last week.

Kent Police is appealing for witnesses to a serious collision after a man died on Monday night.

Officers were called to the London-bound carriageway of the M2 between junctions six and five near Faversham at 23:05 BST.

The collision involved a silver coloured BMW 530.

The driver of the vehicle, a 27-year-old man from the Orpington area, died at the scene.

A road closure was lifted at around 07:00 BST.

Emergency repairs at historic bridge

A bridge over the Medway near Maidstone has been closed for up to three weeks for emergency repairs.

Kent County Council said the historic Teston Bridge was damaged in a collision.

The river will also be shut to boats on the Medway because of the risk of falling debris.
