A man who stabbed a 30-year-old Polish man to death in Blackpool has been jailed for 13 years at Preston Crown Court.

Daniel Sobisz was jailed for 13 years

Daniel Sobisz, 35, of no fixed address, attacked Marcin Pawlow on Central Drive in December.

Sobisz was arrested in Leicester in January and initially charged with murder but the prosecution later accepted a guilty plea to manslaughter.

The 33-year-old former Manchester United trainee has signed a one-year deal, with the option of a further 12 months.

Boss Gary Bowyer said: "He brings a wealth of experience to the team and will be a strong, vocal presence in the middle of the park."

Chilcot report: Iraq war families crowdfund legal costs


Families of some of the British troops killed in Iraq, including a family from Lancaster, have launched a public crowdfunding appeal to pay for lawyers to potentially sue those responsible.

The Iraq War Families Campaign Group wants to raise £150,000 to fund legal work, including analysing the 12-volume Chilcot report on the Iraq war inquiry.

They hope to assess whether people who made mistakes, such as former PM Tony Blair, can be pursued in civil courts.  

Twenty-one-year-old Private Kevin Thompson died after his vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device in 2007.

Police warn of swimming dangers during heatwave

As today's temperatures soar, Lancashire Police have issued a timely reminder about the dangers of swimming in rivers, lakes and reservoirs.

The force launched its Dying for a Dip campaign following death of James Goodship in a reservoir near Colne two years ago.    

Fishing youngsters rescued after Blackburn tree river fall

Five children had to be rescued after they fell from a tree into the river in Witton Park in Blackburn.

They had been fishing from a tree branch which broke, sending them into the water, Lancashire Police said.

They were helped from the river by members of the public who were out running at the time.

Work starts on Blackpool Zoo's new elephant facility

Work has begun on a new multi-million pound elephant enclosure at Blackpool Zoo.

The facility is due to open next summer

The zoo said Project Elephant was the biggest single investment to be undertaken at the attraction and will mean it can successfully house a herd of Asian Elephants.

Due to open next summer, it will be two-and-a-half times bigger than the current one, and will be built on vacant land, extending the zoo by three acres.

CCTV captures disabled woman's purse theft

CCTV images of a man who allegedly posed as a "Good Samaritan" before stealing a disabled woman's purse in Blackpool have been released by police.

The 42-year-old victim was approached by a man who helped her across the road in her wheelchair. 

She later realised her purse was missing and her bank card had been used in several shops. Police are appealing for witnesses following the 7 July theft.

The actor who played Gollum in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films has been made an honorary patron of the Dukes theatre in Lancaster.

Andy Serkis, who began his career there, said he was "delighted" to take up the role as the theatre begins its production of The Hobbit in Williamson Park.

He said: "I performed here in 14 plays on the trot, appearing in a wide variety of plays and I remember my time in Lancaster with great fondness."

Serkis studied at Lancaster University and appeared in the Dukes' very first outdoor production of A Midsummer Night's Dream in 1987.

Blackpool FC deny £10m takeover offer

Blackpool Football Club has strongly denied claims in the Daily Mail it has received a £10m offer to buy the club.

The club has issued a statement on its website to "make it clear" that "no approach whatsoever" has been made from any investor or third party.
