A search is continuing for a gang of masked men who used explosives to steal thousands of pounds from a cash machine in Blackburn. 

The raid happened at about 02.45 at the post office on Whalley Old Road in Blackburn.

Four men wearing balaclavas were seen driving away at speed in a 62 plate dark Volkswagen Golf, said detectives.

Clitheroe traders say £9m market revamp is a 'disgrace'

Traders have been giving their reaction to a planned £9m revamp of Clitheroe's outdoor market which will see the market moved indoors. 

Tom Grewsker said: "I don't like it at all, it seems like they are pushing us into a corner right out of the way," 

He added, it would "lose the whole heart and soul of the market".

Another trader, Eileen Ansar, said plans for an enclosed hall would see the loss of  a "traditional market".

"All of a sudden we are going to lose everything, our heritage. I think it's disgraceful."

A plan to cut 500 jobs over the next three years were approved by Blackburn with Darwen Council last night.

Traders say market revamp will 'destroy' its character

Market traders in Clitheroe say a planned £9m revamp of the town's market area will destroy its traditional character.

Plans for the redevelopment  - which include a 60-bed hotel, retail units, an indoor market and a 56-space car park -  go on public display today.

Some traders are angry at the plans and believe an indoor market isn’t right for the town.

If the proposals are approved by Ribble Valley Borough Council, construction of the new market area will start next spring.

Blackburn council approves 500 job cuts to save £13m

A plan to cut 500 jobs over the next three years has been approved by Blackburn with Darwen Council.

The Council Forum passed the job losses on Thursday in a bid to save £13m over three years.

It also agreed to end weekly bin collections, and introduce charges for green waste and weekend parking.

Councillor Andy Kay, executive member for resources, said making "major changes" was the only way to "reduce the financial demands on the council."

Gang uses explosives in Blackburn cash machine raid

A gang has stolen money from a cash machine at a Blackburn post office.

They used an explosive device on the machine at the shop on Whalley Old Road in the early hours of this morning, said police. 

 It is not yet known how much was taken. Anyone with information is being asked to contact Lancashire Constabulary.

Cricket: James Anderson England selection a 'messy affair'

England captain Alastair Cook said he was surprised by the row over the decision to omit Lancashire's James Anderson for the first Test against Pakistan.

Anderson, 33, believed he was fit after a shoulder injury but the England selectors were unwilling to risk him.

A 12-year-old girl who died at a caravan site in Fleetwood has been named.

Paige Daughtry, from Oldham, Greater Manchester, was found "unresponsive" by paramedics at the Cala Gran Holiday Park on Monday.

Lancashire Police said although the precise cause of death had not been determined, there were not thought to be any suspicious circumstances.

Travel: Traffic light failures

There are traffic light failures in two parts of the county this morning. The first in the Leyland area on Wigan Road at the Woodsman traffic lights.

The second is causing slow traffic on Marine Road West in Morecambe at the Central Drive junction.
