Hen harrier action plan has 'failed', says RSPB

A government plan to increase hen harrier numbers on England's moors has failed, the RSPB said.

The Hen Harrier Action Plan, supported by a number of groups, was set up in January to help the "persecuted" birds.

However, the RSPB said "illegal killing" and "depressing" incidents, including one involving an armed man in the Peak District, have continued.

Lancashire is one of the last remaining strongholds of hen harriers in England, conservationists have said.

Murder arrest after Jonathon Plum dies in St Annes assault

A man has died in hospital after suffering serious head injuries in an assault in Lancashire.

Jonathon James Plum, 37, from St Annes, was attacked in Wood Street near to the junction of Orchard Road in the early hours of Sunday morning, police said.

He was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital and died on Monday night.

A 20-year-old man from St Annes, arrested on suspicion of wounding, has been re-arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody.

New Crimestoppers campaign aims to 'educate' people how to avoid being scammed

A charity is launching a campaign to prevent elderly and vulnerable people falling foul of scams.

Crimestoppers campaign to offer advice to potential scam victims

Crimestoppers has joined forces with the Post Office to help potential victims understand how criminals can obtain bank and personal details.

"The problem is it's so easy to be taken in," said Gary Murray, North West regional manager for Crimestoppers. "We're trying to get people to think before they act, to say 'I don't know this person'.

"Throughout Lancashire many, many people are victims of scams and fraud and we're looking to try and educate elderly and vulnerable people, but also younger people who are maybe a bit more savvy about how scammers use technology."

Football: Burnley ban fan for racial abuse

Burnley have banned a supporter who racially abused a Bradford player during a pre-season friendly from attending matches indefinitely.

A 30-year-old man from Accrington has been identified by the club. A second man will face no club action, although police are still investigating.

The incident was described as from "the stone ages" by Burnley striker Andre Gray after the match.

Lancashire Trading Standards backs new anti-scam campaign

Lancashire County Council's Trading Standards department has backed a new campaign run by Crimestoppers to help prevent people falling victims to scammers.

Tony Haslam said the council is being "informed on a regular basis" of instances of people being misled and scammed.

"Most of the scams start with an unsolicited contact. If you're being contacted out of the blue by post, online, or by phone you should be asking the question 'why are they contacting me?'.

"What we would tell people is for anyone in that position is to say 'I need to check who you are'."

Arrest made after man threatened with gun in Preston

A 30-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm and making threats to kill after a man was threatened with a gun in Preston.

Armed officers were sent to an address in Skeffington Road where they cordoned off a property.

The arrest comes as part of an investigation into a threat made against a 26-year-old man yesterday.

Girl sexually assaulted at rail station

A 16-year-old girl has been sexually assaulted on a railway station platform after being followed by three men.

The attack took place at Accrington station in Lancashire in the early hours of Sunday, said police.

The girl and a friend had been walking along Richmond Road when they got talking to the men, who followed the pair to the station, Lancashire Police said.

One of the group then committed a serious sexual assault.

Fleetwood Town confirm they have accepted the resignation of manager Steven Pressley after nine months in charge.

Pressley, 42, replaced former Scotland team-mate Graham Alexander in October 2015 with the club in the relegation zone and guided them to safety.

"The decision was made this morning following a meeting," said a statement on the club website.

"It was agreed it would be best to take the club in a different direction."

Woman, 89, dies after Bolton-le-Sands crash

An 89-year-old woman has died after a car crash in Bolton-le-Sands.

The woman, from Carnforth, suffered multiple injuries after hitting another vehicle that was travelling in the opposite direction in Slyne Road yesterday afternoon.

She was airlifted to hospital but died later.

The other driver was treated for bruising, shock and whiplash. The road was closed for more than five hours while investigations took place.

Girl, 16, sexually assaulted in Accrington

A 16-year-old girl has been sexually assaulted at Accrington railway station.

The teenager was attacked at the Paxton Street side of the station at about 04:55 on Sunday.

She and a friend had been at the platform with three men they had met earlier.

The attacker, who is described as Asian aged 19 to 20 years old with short dark hair, ran off towards Paxton Street. Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
